    סִימָןm. (סוּם I, v. םוּמָא II) mark, sign; omen; symptom; cipher, mnemotechnical note. B. Mets.22b ס׳ העשוי לידרס לא הוי ס׳ a mark (on a lost object) which is liable to be effaced by treading upon it, is no mark (by which one can claim it). Ib. 23a ס׳ הבא מאליו an accidental mark (not made purposely). Ib. 24b נתן בה ס׳ he told a sign (by which he identified it).     סָמַךְ(b. h.) (to close, join, 1) to pack, make close, stamp. Shebi. III, 8 לא יִסְמוֹךְ בעפר one should not support the dam by packing earth upon it, v. סָבַךְ. Gen. R. s. 5 סְמָבָןוכ׳ he crowded them between (Lev. R. s. 10 שָׂמָן); a. e. 2) to support, stem. Midr. Till. to Ps. 136, עוג היה … וסוֹמְכוֹ Og broke a mountain loòse and threw it on the Israelites …, Moses took a pebble and mentioned the Holy Name over it and stemmed its fall; הידים שכך סוֹמְכוֹת the hands which thus stem (the mountain); Deut.
