Fab. 2), daughter of Cadmus and Harmonia, sister of Semele, wife of Athamas king of Thebes, nurse of Bacchus, mother of Learchus and Melicerta, and step-mother of Phrixus and Helle. Being pursued by Athamas, who had become raving mad, she threw herself with Melicerta into the sea, whereupon they were both changed into sea-deities. Ino, as such, was called Matuta (Gr. Leucothea), and Melicerta Palaemon or Portumnus, Cic. Tusc. 1, 12, 28; Ov. M. 4, 416 sq.; id. F. 6, 485; Hor. A. P. 123 al.; cf. Preller's Gr.
