    n. m. Cracher (also: éternuer) dans le son: To be guillotined. (The sick humour is made vividly explicit because the chopped-off head falls into a tub of bran which soaks up the blood.)

    n. m. Les son-et-lumière (joc. & slightly pej.): 'The old fogeys', the way- over-sixties. (The French film of the late 50s, Les Tricheurs with Jacques Charrier and Laurent Terzief, gave this and other slightly derogatory age-group appellations a tremendous platform. The son-et-lumière are literally the 'grand old ruins' worthy of sightseers.)
    III.
    This possessive adjective, its feminine sa and plural ses, are sometimes equivalent in colloquial French to the definite article, le, la or les. Comme toujours, il fait son crétin! As always, he's playing the fool!

    2. To 'pitch a yarn', to come out with a rather incredible story. Il nous en a sorti de belles! You should have heard what he told us!

    v. intrans.
    1. To 'stick one's neck out' (where a criminal venture is concerned), to take a risk of some sort.
    2. En sortir (also: sortir du trou): To have finished 'porridge', to have come out of prison.
    3. D'où sortez-vous? (iron.):
      a Where were you dragged up?—Haven't you any manners?!
      b Fancy you not knowing that! (Where have you been all this time?)
    4. Il n'y a pas à sortir de là! You can't get away from that! — There's no disputing this! Je ne sors pas de là! I'm sticking to that! — You won't get me to shift!
    5. Merci, je sors d'en prendre! (iron.): Thanks all the same but I've had my lot! — It's the kind of experience I don't want to have again!

    2. To spend time (and quite a lengthy period) doing something unpleasant. Encore quinze jours à tirer et on part en vacances! Another fortnight's grind and it's 'holidays here we come!' Il a tiré cinq piges de dur: He did five years' porridge.
    3. En voilà une autre de tirée! (of day, month or year): And that's another one gone!
    4. Tirer la couverture à soi: To get the most of something for oneself (either kudos or worldly goods).
    5. Tirer l'échelle: To 'call it a day', to have to give up. Après une connerie comme ça, il n'y a plus qu'à tirer l'échelle! After a boob of that magnitude, there doesn't seem to be any point in going any further! (also: tirer la ficelle).
    6. Tirer la langue: To be near exhaustion (literally to have one's tongue lolling out through sheer fatigue).
    7. Tirer les vers du nez à quelqu'un: To 'pump' someone, to winkle information out of someone.
    8. Tirer un coup: To 'have a bang', to 'have it off', to have coition.
    9. Tirer un fil (of man): To 'splash one's boots', to 'have a pee', to urinate.

    v. intrans.
    1. To 'dip', to steal.
    2. Tirer au cul (also: tirer au flanc or au renard): To 'dodge a chore', to steer clear of hard work.
    3. Tirer sur la ficelle: To 'go it a bit strong', to exaggerate. (There is a possible parallel with the English 'pull the other one!' retort.)
