Les commerçants utilisent en général les deux systèmes.Équivalences1 inch = 2,54 cm1 foot = 12 inches = 30,48 cm1 yard = 3 feet = 91,44 cm1 furlong = 220 yards = 201,17 m1 mile = 1760 yards = 1,61 kmPour la prononciation des nombres, voir ⇒ Les nombres.dire direone millimetre 1 mm 0.04 in* inchesone centimetre 1 cm 0.39 inone metre 1 m 39.37 ins3.28 ft feet†1.09 yds yardsone kilometre 1 km 1094 yds0.62 ml miles* Le symbole de inch est ": 4 inches = 4".† Le symbole de foot et feet est ': 5 feet 4 inches = 5' 4".Pour l’écriture, noter:- on écrit -metre en anglais britannique, mais -meter en anglais américain;- pour le système métrique, les abréviations sont les mêmes en anglais qu’en français;- l’anglais utilise un point là où le français a une virgule.il y a 100 centimètres dans un mètre= there are 100 centimetres in one metreil y a douze pouces dans un pied= there are twelve inches in one footil y a trois pieds dans un yard= there are three feet in one yardLa distancequelle distance y a-t-il entre A et B?= what’s the distance from A to B? ou how far is it from A to B?à quelle distance de l’église se trouve l’école?= how far is the school from the church?il y a 2 km= it is 2 kilometresil y a environ 2 km= it is about 2 kilometresla distance est de 2 km= the distance is 2 kilometresil y a 2 km entre A et B= it is 2 kilometres from A to BA est à 2 km de B= A is 2 kilometres from B(Noter l’absence d’équivalent anglais de la préposition française à avant le chiffre dans le dernier exemple.)à peu près 2 km= about 2 kilometrespresque 3 km= almost 3 kilometresplus de 2 km= more than 2 kilometres ou over 2 kilometresmoins de 3 km= less than 3 kilometres ou under 3 kilometresA est plus loin de B que C de D= it is further from A to B than from C to D ou A is further away from B than C is from DC est plus près de B que A= C is nearer to B than A isA est plus près de B que de C= A is nearer to B than to CA est aussi loin que B= A is as far away as BA et B sont à la même distance= A and B are the same distance awayNoter l’ordre des mots dans l’adjectif composé anglais, et l’utilisation du trait d’union.
