    εἰδωλόθυτος, ον (s. εἴδωλον and θύω; 4 Macc 5:2), only subst. τὸ εἰδωλόθυτον, someth. offered to a cultic image/idol, food sacrificed to idols an expr. which (s. εἴδωλον 2) was possible only within Israelite tradition (cp. Ps.-Phoc. 31 [an interpolation prob. based on Ac 15:29]; Just., D. 34, 8; 35, 1), where it was used in a derogatory sense. Polytheists said ἱερόθυτον (s. ἱερόθυτος). It refers to sacrificial meat, part of which was burned on the altar as the deities’ portion (cp. Orig., C. Cels. 8, 30, 1: τό εἰδωλόθυτον θύεται δαιμονίοις), part was eaten at a solemn meal in the temple, and part was sold in the market (so Artem. 5, 2) for home use.     περιστερά, ᾶς, ἡ (Hdt., Aristoph.+) a bird of the family Columbidae (Aristot., HA 562b, 3–7 differentiates from τρυγών [turtle-dove] and φάττα: s. also 593a, 16. The rock-dove is the species generally seen in public places.) freq. glossed either as pigeon or dove (but the use of the latter term in preference to the former suggests a difference that cannot precisely be determined from usage in our texts), used for sacrifice, hence sold in the temple Mt 21:12; Mk 11:15; J 2:14, 16. Dalman, Arbeit VII (s. οἰκία 1a end).—On the δύο νοσσοὶ περιστερῶν Lk 2:24 s. νοσσός. The pigeon which, fr. the viewpoint of natural science in ancient times, has no bile, was for the early Christians the symbol of all kinds of virtues (s. WBauer, D. Leben Jesu 1909, 117): ἀκέραιοι ὡς αἱ περιστεραί Mt 10:16; cp. IPol 2:2. As a pers. principle it dwells in humans Ro 7:17, 20, viz., in the flesh (s. σάρξ 2cα) 8:3; cp. vs. 2; 7:25. The earthly body is hence a σῶμα τῆς ἁ. 6:6 (Col 2:11 v.l.).—As abstr. for concr. τὸν μὴ γνόντα ἁ. ὑπέρ ἡμῶν ἁμαρτίαν ἐποίησεν (God) made him, who never sinned, to be sin (i.e. the guilty one) for our sakes 2 Cor 5:21.
