राम a. [रम् कर्तरि घञ् ण वा]1 Pleasing, delighting, rejoicing,-2 Beautiful, lovely, charming.-3 Obscure; dark-coloured, black.-4 White.-मः 1 N. of three celebrated personages; (a) Paraśurāma, son of Jama- dagni; (b) Balarāma, son of Vasudeva and brother of Kṛiṣṇa, q.q.v.v.; (c) Rāmachandra or Sītārāma, son of Daśaratha and Kausalyā and the hero of the Rāmāyaṇa; (the word is thus derived in Purāṇas:-- राशब्दो विश्ववचनो मश्चापीश्वरवाचकः । [When quite a boy, he with his brother was taken by Viśvāmitra, with the permission of Daśaratha, to his hermitage to protect his sacrifices from the demons that obstructed them. Rāma killed them all with perfect ease, and received from the sage several miraculous missiles as a reward. He then accompanied Viśvāmitra to the capital of Janaka where he married Sītā having performed the wonderful feat of bending Siva's bow, and then return- ed to Ayodhyā. Daśaratha, seeing that Rāma was growing fitter and fitter to rule the kingdom, resolved to install him as heir-apparent. But, on the eve of the day of coronation, his favourite wife Kaikeyī, at the instigation of her wicked nurse Mantharā, asked him to fulfil the two boons he had formerly promised to her, by one of which she demanded the exile of Rāma for fourteen years and by the other the installation of her own son Bharata as Yuvarāja. The king was terribly shocked, and tried his best to dissuade her from her wicked demands, but was at last obliged to yield. The dutiful son immediately prapared to go into exile accom- panied by his beautiful young wife Sītā and his devoted brother Lakṣmana. The period of his exile was event- ful, and the two brothers killed several powerful demons and at last roused the jealousy of Rāvaṇa himself. The wicked demon resolved to try Rāma by carrying off his beauteous wife for whom he had conceived an ar- dent passion, and accomplished his purpose being assisted by Mārīcha. After several fruitless inquiries as to her whereabouts, Hanumat ascertained that she was in Laṅkā and persuaded Rāma to invade the island and kill the ravisher. The monkeys built a bridge across the ocean over which Rāma with his numerous troops passed, conquered Laṅkā, and killed Rāvaṇa along with his whole host of demons. Rāma, attended by his wife and friends in battle, triumphant- ly returned to Ayodhyā where he was crowned king by Vasiṣṭha. He reigned long and righteously and was succeeded by his son Kuśa. Rāma is said to be the seventh incarnation of Viṣṇu; cf. 69 Φίλιππος
Φίλιππος, ου, ὁ (freq. found in lit., ins, pap; occurring also in LXX and Joseph., Ath.) Philip (‘Fond-of-horses’) a common name in the Gr-Rom. world. In our lit.:① the tetrarch, son of Herod the Great and Cleopatra of Jerusalem (s. Joseph., index Φίλιππος 6). He was tetrarch of Gaulanitis, Trachonitis, Auranitis, Batanea and Panias (so Joseph., if the indications he gives in var. passages may thus be brought together), and acc. to Lk 3:1, also Iturea (all small districts northeast of Palestine). He rebuilt Panias as Caesarea (Philippi) and Bethsaida as Julias. Joseph. praises his personality and administration (Ant. 18, 106f). He was married to Salome, the daughter of Herodias (s. Ἡρωδιάς and Σαλώμη, end). He died 33/34 A.D., whereupon his territory was joined to the Rom. province of Syria, though only for a short time. Mt 16:13; Mk 8:27. Some think that this Philip is erroneously implied Mt 14:3; Mk 6:17; Lk 3:19 v.l.; s. 2 below.—Schürer I 336–40.② The Philip mentioned Mt 14:3 and Mk 6:17 is associated by some scholars with a half-brother of Herod Antipas (s. Ἡρῳδιάς), but the identification is not otherwise attested.③ the apostle, one of the Twelve. In the lists of the Twelve (which is the only place where his name is mentioned in the synoptics and Ac), he is found in fifth place, after the two pairs of brothers Peter-Andrew, James-John Mt 10:3; Mk 3:18; Lk 6:14; Ac 1:13. He is given more prominence in J, where he is one of the first to be called, and comes fr. Bethsaida, the city of Simon and Andrew; cp. 1:43–46, 48; 6:5, 7; 12:21f; 14:8f. Papias (2:4): one of the πρεσβύτεροι.—On the apostle and the evangelist (s. 4 below), who have oft. been confused, s. TZahn, Apostel u. Apostelschüler in der Provinz Asien: Forsch. Ac 8:5–13 after the death of Stephen he worked in Samaria w. great success; vss. 26–39 he baptized a non-Israelite, the chamberlain of the Ethiopian Queen Candace (MvanWanroy, VD ’40, 287–93; FBlanke, Kirchenfreund 84, ’50, 145–49) and vs. 40 preached the gospel in all the cities fr. Ashdod to Caesarea. Later he lived in Caesarea w. his four unmarried daughters, who possessed the gift of prophecy 21:8f (s. [In mythology, the sun is regarded as a son of Kaśyapa and Aditi. He is represented as moving in a chariot drawn by seven horses, with Aruṇa for his charioteer. He is also represented as all-seeing, the constant beholder of the good and bad deeds of mortals. Samjñā (or Chhāyā or Aśvinī) was his principal wife, by whom he had Yama and Yamunā, the two Aśvins and Saturn. So in Icel. at the present day children, immediately after getting out of bed in the morning, are made to run out of doors bare-headed, there to say a short prayer or verse, and when they return ‘bid good-day,’—a ‘good-day’ being not allowable till this is done; this is called to ‘fetch the good-morning,’ sækja góðan-daginn; the verse Pass. 3. 12 is set apart for this use; but the very words of this verse—á morni hverjum þá upp stend eg, fyrst eg stíg niðr fæti á jörð, færi eg þér hjartans þakkar-görð—were evidently suggested to the poet’s mind by, this beautiful and time-honoured custom then general, but now perhaps fast dying out.B.
