En el mudo, dirigio, sobre todo, filmes de accion de tono decididamente viril, lo que le acarreo la fama de ser un “director de hombres”. En los origenes del cine parlante, dirige dos westerns con un joven Gary Cooper como protagonista. The Virginian se hara famosa inmediatamente, como sus realizaciones posteriores, Tierra de pasion (Red Dust, 1932), primera de las tres versiones de la historia que conocemos mejor como Mogambo (en la pelicula de John Ford, Ava Gardner sustituye a la Jean Harlow de Tierra de pasion, mientras el seductor Clark Gable es el mismo, 20 anos despues), La isla del tesoro (Treasure Island, 1934), y la popularisima Capitanes intrepidos (Captains Courageous, 1937), por la que Spencer Tracy gano un merecido Oscar. Victor Fleming murio repentinamente en 1949 de un ataque al corazon, inmediatamente despues de terminar Juana de Arco (Joan of Arc), que seria su ultima pelicula.
