Природный или искусственный водоём, водоток или иной объект, в котором постоянно или временно сосредоточены воды.

Сосредоточение природных вод из поверхности суши либо в горных породах, имеющее характерные формы распространения и черты режима
[ ГОСТ 19179-73]То есть, водный объект – естественное или рукотворное образование с постоянным или временным скоплением вод. Имеет характерные формы и признаки водного режима и даже агрегатных состояний. Скопление вод может быть как в формах рельефа, так и в недрах.
Различают поверхностные водные объекты, состоящие из поверхностных вод и покрытых ими земель в пределах береговой линии, и подземные водные объекты.
Существуют и такие природные образования переходного характера, которые не обладают признаками водного объекта, но обладающие «возможностью» вредного воздействия. Примером таких образования являются, в частности, «дышашие» озёра. Суть явления заключается в неожиданном и быстром (иногда в одну ночь) появлении и исчезновении «большой воды» во впадинах рельефа, болотистых и луговых низменностях (иногда площадью до 20 км2).
«Дышащие» озёра наблюдаются в Ленинградской области, Прионежье, в Новгородчине, Архангельской области, в Вологодчине, в Дагестане. Внезапно возникающие возле населённых пунктов и различных коммуникаций озёра подтопляют их. Есть случаи, когда такие «временные водоёмы» становились водными путями для речного и рыболовного флота. Так, существовавшее в конце 19 века в США озеро Алахуа, неожиданно возникшее во Флориде, на целое десятилетие стало судоходным.
К поверхностным водным объектам относятся: моря, реки, ручьи, каналы, озёра, обводнённые карьеры, пруды, водохранилища, болота, ледники, снежники, родники, гейзеры.
К подземным водным объектам относятся бассейны подземных вод, водоносные горизонты.
