• football (American) футбол ( американский). Играют мячом овальной формы две команды по одиннадцать игроков в каждой на поле размером 330 футов (= 100 м) на 160 футов (= 50 м). Каждая команда стремится набрать очки путём пересечения игроком с мячом [*touchdown] линии ворот [end line], за что присуждается 6 очков. С мячом можно бежать, можно его бить ногами или передавать руками. Игрока с мячом атакуют противники, а члены его команды стараются их блокировать. Игра сопряжена с риском травм, поэтому футболисты выступают в защитных шлемах и одеты в форму, напоминающую доспехи. Игроки, получившие травмы, тут же заменяются запасными. Существуют 3 категории правил: студенческие [collegiate], профессиональные и школьные [high school]. Все они довольно сложные и ежегодно в них вносятся изменения. В Европе называется "американский футбол" в отличие от европейского [soccer]. Игра с мячом между двумя командами. Сочетает элементы регби и европейского футбола. Списочный состав профессиональной команды - 47 человек (в ходе игры разрешается неограниченное количество замен). Из каждой команды на поле находятся 11 игроков, занимающих строго определенную позицию. Время матча разделено на 4 периода по 15 минут чистого времени. Продолжительность игры до 3 часов. Поле (90 м х 49 м) размечено по ярдам. Разметка играет важную роль при продвижении к лицевой линии ворот противника. Мяч овальной формы [ball, pigskin], его вес 396,2-424,5 г. Розыгрыш мяча начинается со схватки [ scrimmage] в центре поля, после чего нападающей команде разрешается только один пас вперед; игрок нападения, получивший мяч, стремится пересечь с мячом лицевую линию ворот противника. Игроки команды соперников стараются воспрепятствовать этому, отобрать мяч и начать атаку. За каждый "занос" [ touchdown] мяча команде начисляется 6 очков и предоставляется право пробить мяч в ворота противника с 35-ярдовой отметки. Если бьющий [kicker] попадает в ворота, то команде начисляется дополнительное очко. Против игрока, владеющего мячом [player carrying the ball], допускаются любые приемы с целью отобрать его. За меткое попадание мяча в ворота противника в ходе игры начисляется 3 очка. Победителем выходит команда, совершившая больше прорывов за лицевую линию и набравшая больше очков. Правила и основы тактики игры были разработаны в 80-е гг. XIX в. У. Кэмпом [Camp, Walt] из Йельского университета [ Yale University], который считается отцом американского футбола. Игра быстро стала популярной, но в 1906 протесты против некоторых жестких правил заставили президента Т. Рузвельта [ Roosevelt, Theodore (Teddy)] встретиться с представителями команд студенческого футбола [ college football], в результате чего некоторые элементы игры были изменены. Футбольная форма включает защитный шлем [helmet] и защитную маску [faceguard], а также подбитые фетром кожаные наплечники [shoulder pads].
