En 2002, cette technologie vise d’abord les ordinateurs portables. La carte WiFi, d’abord externe, est peu à peu intégrée aux nouvelles machines (50% des ordinateurs portables à la fin 2003). Cette technologie est ensuite utilisable par les assistants personnels (PDA) début 2003, puis par les téléphones portables à la fin 2003. Le nombre d’utilisateurs mondiaux, qui est de 9,3 millions en 2003, est multiplié par trois en 2004, grâce à l’augmentation des hotspots. A partir de 2004, selon les besoins, la WiFi peut être secondée ou remplacée par la WiMAX (worldwide interoperability for microwave access), qui offre des services similaires sur une portée de quelques dizaines de kilomètres.
