Китайско-японская война служит фоном для похождений нескольких колоритных авантюристов, красочно сыгранных известнейшими актерами. Особо отметим дуэт Штрохайма и Бален: он – торговец оружием, сохранивший в себе достоинство и хорошие манеры; она – простодушная роковая женщина с романтичным и непосредственным характером. Удивительно естественная и непринужденная игра Мирей Бален кажется очень современной. Жан Деланнуа, ловкий и опытный режиссер, играет в Штернберга для бедных и дергает за ниточки этой экзотической зрительской драмы, оставляющей послевкусие из меланхолии и разочарования. В фильме нет четкого деления на добро и зло, он стоит за рамками морали: это помогло ему выдержать испытание временем. В этом рассказе нет настоящих «злодеев» – в нем действуют скорее жалкие люди, заблудшие, потерявшиеся, вынужденные идти на компромиссы с самими собой, обстоятельствами, окружением, эпохой и историей. Диалоги Роже Витрака не стремятся блистать сами по себе и полностью подчиняются характерам персонажей.N.B. Фильм вышел на экраны лишь в 1942 г., причем в этой версии Штрохайма заменил Пьер Ренуар.
