81 -dipendere-
Nota d'usoIl verbo dipendere si traduce in inglese con to depend. Tuttavia bisogna fare attenzione alla preposizione che segue questo verbo: in italiano si dice dipendere da, in inglese to depend on: Dipende dal tempo, it depends on the weather (non from the weather). -

83 -parlare stretto-
Nota d'usoQuando si vuole affermare che una persona parla con un accento così marcato da rendere quasi incomprensibile ciò che dice, non è corretto tradurre letteralmente dall'italiano l'aggettivo stretto con “strict”. È necessario ricorrere ad espressioni come “thick” o “heavy accent”: Parla australiano stretto, she's got a thick (o heavy) Australian accent (non she speaks strict Australian). -
84 -prego e please-
85 -there isn't o isn't here?-
Sarebbe del tutto errato tradurre letteralmente: Mr Jones there isn't. -
86 -to look forward to-
Nota d'usoto look forward to, quando è seguito da un verbo, non regge l'infinito con il to ma la forma in - ing: si dice perciò She's looking forward to going to New York, non vede l'ora di andare a New York e non She's looking forward to go to New York. -
87 -to make-
Nota d'usoNella costruzione causativa il verbo all'infinito che segue to make non è preceduto da to: si dice That made me think, ciò mi fece riflettere e non That made me to think; The medicine made me feel better, la medicina mi fece sentire meglio; They made him resign, lo costrinsero a dimettersi, lo fecero dimettere. Nella corrispondente forma passiva l'infinito deve invece essere preceduto da to: She must be made to come back, bisogna farla tornare, la si deve far tornare; I was made to wait for hours, mi fecero aspettare per ore. -
88 -to say (passive)-
Nota d'usoCon verbi come to say, to think, to believe è possibile usare la costruzione passiva to be said, to be thought, to be believed + to + infinito, che si traduce in italiano con una forma impersonale: He is said to be a good actor, si dice (o dicono) che sia un bravo attore; ha fama di essere un bravo attore; High speed is thought to have been the cause of the accident, si pensa (o si ritiene) che l'incidente sia stato causato dall'elevata velocità; The people arrested are believed to belong to a terrorist group, si ritiene che gli arrestati appartengano a un gruppo terroristico; John was believed to be innocent, si credeva che John fosse innocente (o John era ritenuto innocente). -
89 -to tell-
Nota d'usoIl verbo to tell, diversamente dal suo corrispettivo italiano “dire, raccontare”, è seguito direttamente dall'oggetto (persona a cui si dice qc.), senza alcuna preposizione: The child told his mum about his day, il bambino raccontò alla mamma la sua giornata. -
90 -to wish-
Nota d'usoIl verbo della proposizione retta da to wish (def. 4) è al congiuntivo passato oppure è preceduto da would.1 Il congiuntivo passato è usato per esprimere un desiderio la cui realizzazione non dipende dalla volontà del soggetto della subordinata: I wish I had more time to read (o I wish I could have more time to read), vorrei avere più tempo per leggere, magari avessi più tempo per leggere!; I wish you didn't suffer so much, vorrei che non soffrissi così; I wish I were (o was) rich, come vorrei essere ricco!È possibile anche usare il past perfect: I wish I hadn't drunk so much, se solo avessi bevuto di meno!2 would è usato per esprimere il desiderio che il soggetto della subordinata compia l'azione specificata: I wish he would be quiet, come vorrei che stesse zitto!, magari stesse zitto!, se stesse un po' zitto!; I wish you would trust me, vorrei che ti fidassi di me, se solo ti fidassi di me!would può anche essere usato parlando del tempo o di macchine, ecc., come se avessero una propria volontà: I wish it would stop raining, come vorrei che smettesse di piovere, se solo smettesse di piovere! (ma, dato che si riferisce a uno stato di cose e non a un'azione, si dice I wish it weren't so cold today, vorrei che non facesse così freddo oggi).La costruzione I wish I would non è possibile ( I wish I would work less), come pure la costruzione wish + would have + participio passato ( I wish I wouldn't have drunk so much). -
91 -Wedding reception-
Social1 Wedding receptionWhere's the reception? Dov'è il ricevimento? The reception's in the hotel across the road from the registry office. Il ricevimento è nell'hotel di fronte al comune. They've got an enormous function room. Hanno una sala per cerimonie enorme. Is there going to be a disco? Ci sarà da ballare? They've hired a band.
