Подход к изучению спроса и поведения потребителей, предложенный П. Самуэльсоном вместо метода кардиналистской полезности (см. Cardinal utility) и кривых безразличия (см. Indifference curve). Иными словами, теория выявленных предпочтений дает альтернативное объяснение тому факту, что кривая спроса отдельного потребителя имеет нисходящий наклон (см. Demand curve). Рассмотрим график. Если потребитель останавливает свой выбор на сочетании денежных средств в сумме ОМ1, которые он готов потратить, и товара в количестве OX1, который он хочет на эти деньги купить, н окажется в точке (а) на бюджетной линии МХ (см. Budget line). Если товар Х становится ешевле, и потребитель может купить больше этого товара, его реальный доход увеличивается. огда он может переместиться на бюджетную линию МХ2 и выбрать сочетание денег и товара Х, апример, в точке (b). Однако изменение положения потребителя обусловлено не только увеличением его реального дохода по причине снижения цены на товар Х. Частично оно объясняется эффектом замещения более дешевого товара Х другими товарами. Этот эффект всегда положительный, т.е. невозможно купить меньше товара Х после перемещения на линию МХ2 по сравнению с его количеством на бюджетной линии МХ. Если новый набор товаров в точке (b) пропорционально сокращается, например, по причине снижения дохода потребителя (на графике сдвиг бюджетной линии в положение М2Х3), потребитель выберет новое сочетание, например, в точке (с). Эффект замещения (см. Substitution effect) выглядит на графике как перемещение потребительских предпочтений из точки Х1 в точку Х5, а эффект дохода (см. Income effect) - из точки Х5 в точку Х4. Cм.
