   The first definition is attested to in the DRAE; Santamaría confirms the usage of the second in the Southwest, providing the example "She lived in her old adobe," also noting that the lot or grounds on which such a structure was to be built could be referred to as "an adobe sole." ( Sole, according to the OED, is an obsolete term meaning "the foundation of a building; the site of a city, etc.") Spanish architecture was also greatly influenced by the Moors who introduced styles and materials now intimately associated with the Southwest.

   4) As an adjective, several English sources note that the term denotes Mexican origin and usually connotes inferiority. For instance, the Mexican dollar or silver peso was called a "dobie dollar," or "dobie," for short. Cowboys were familiar with adobe as building material on the ranches and haciendas where they worked. Cowboy English is the source of the expression dobe wall listed below, according to Bentley, Adams, and Watts.

(Sp. model spelled same [fandáŋgo], of uncertain origin, perhaps < fado, a popular Portuguese song and dance < Latinfatum 'destiny; prophetic utterance' because it was a lyrical commentary about a person's fate).

   1) New Mexico: 1807. A lively Spanish or Spanish-American dance in triple time accompanied by castanets.

   2) DARE: 1843. The music that accompanies such a dance.

   3) New Mexico: 1774. A social party or celebration where dancing is a principal activity.

   4) DARE: 1848. Any boisterous, disorderly get-together.

   5) Texas: 1890. A dance hall. The DARE notes that this usage is obscure.

   6) As a verb, to throw a celebration for someone.

   7) California: 1928. As an attributive adjective, it relates to prostitution (according to the DARE, dance halls were commonly associated with prostitution). Thus, a fandango house was a brothel, and fandango girls were prostitutes. Fandango is glossed in the DRAE as an old Spanish dance that is still common today in Andalusia, Spain. It is a dance in triple time with lively and passionate movements accompanied by guitar playing, singing, castanets, and sometimes violins and cymbals. In Spanish the term may also refer to the music and verses that accompany a fandango dance or, figuratively, to a brawl or uproar. Cobos glosses fandango as a dance or "shindig."

   1) A stocking; also a foot, according to Adams. The DRAE glosses it as the part of a stocking that covers the foot.

   2) Adams also glosses this term as "a worthless person." The Royal Academy confirms this usage, stating that it may refer to a useless, dull, or contemptible person.

   3) A rope. The DRAE and Santamaría concur with this definition. The DM references it as a rope or cord made of strong twisted fiber used to snare animals by the feet. From southeastern Mexico to South America, it refers to a twisted strip of rawhide cured with wax.

   4) Carlisle: 1929. As a verb, to throw an animal by catching its forefeet with a rope. The DRAE lists two terms with this definition, pealar and apealar. Santamaría and Islas note that pialar and apialar are also common in Mexico.

OED: 1827. To leave, or clear out. This term originated in the Southwest, but has since become common slang throughout the United States. It is generally used as an intransitive verb, but as Blevins and the OED note, it also has a transitive usage, as in "they vamoosed the ranch."
