В период Реконструкции [ Reconstruction] во главе штата стояли радикальные республиканцы [ Radical Republicans]. Вирджиния была вновь принята в состав Союза в 1870. Начиная с 1880-х власть принадлежала преимущественно консервативным демократам, занимавшим высшие посты в период 1885-1969. На протяжении нескольких десятилетий главной политической фигурой штата был его губернатор (1926-33), а затем сенатор (1933-65) от Вирджинии Г.     Первая английская колония в Северной Америке. Названа в честь английской "королевы-девственницы" ["Virgin Queen"] Елизаветы I. Колония была создана в местах традиционного проживания племен поухатан [ Powhatan], чероки [ Cherokee], саскуэханна [ Susquehanna] и др. Попытки создания колонии были впервые предприняты испанцами в 1570, когда они создали недолго просуществовавшую миссию на р. Йорк [York River]. В 1584 Уолтер Роли по приказу Елизаветы I предпринял экспедицию, которая создала на о. Роанок [ Roanoke Island] колонию, которой суждено было стать "исчезнувшей" [Roanoke Colony, Lost Colony]. 20 декабря 1606 группа поселенцев численностью 143 человека под предводительством Дж. Смита [ Smith, John] отправилась в будущую колонию на трех судах Лондонской компании [Virginia Company of London, London Company]. Высадившись 26 апреля 1607, они основали поселение Джеймстаун [ Jamestown], с которого началось развитие колонии. Из первых 105 колонистов 73 умерли от голода и болезней за первые 7 месяцев.     Юрист, государственный деятель и писатель. В 1772 начал адвокатскую практику в вирджинской глубинке, затем в столице Вирджинии г. Ричмонде. Увлекся литературным трудом и в 1803 выпустил свое первое и самое удачное литературное произведение "Письма британского шпиона" ["Letters of a British Spy"]. Продолжал как адвокатскую деятельность, так и занятия литературой, больше всего публицистикой. В 1817 вышла написанная им биография вирджинского революционного деятеля и патриота П. Генри [ Henry, Patrick] - "Очерки жизни и личности Патрика Генри" ["Sketches of the Life and Character of Patrick Henry"]. Не смущаясь нехваткой документальных материалов о П. Генри (полное отсутствие протоколов дебатов в законодательном собрании [House of Burgesses] Вирджинии), на основании легенд о красноречии своего героя приписал ему многие высказывания, которые позднее вошли в поговорку (например, "Дайте мне свободу..." [ Give me liberty...]), а также роль главного инициатора революционного движения за независимость колоний, что позднее было опровергнуто серьезными историками. Однако книга Уэрта в течение нескольких лет считалась наиболее авторитетной биографией П. Генри, несмотря на протесты Дж. Адамса [ Adams, John] и других патриотов из Новой Англии [ New England].
