78 Custer, George Armstrong

В 1874 возглавил военную экспедицию в индейскую резервацию Блэк-хиллс [ Black Hills], где открытие золота привело к притоку белых и широкомасштабной войне с шайеннами и сиу [ Sioux]. В решающем наступлении 1876 Кастер во главе южной колонны приблизился к лагерю индейцев на р. Литл-Бигхорн [Little Bighorn River] и, нарушив инструкции, немедленно ввязался в бой. В лагере находились несколько тысяч воинов под руководством вождей Сидящий Бык [ Sitting Bull], Неистовый Конь [ Crazy Horse] и др. Небольшой отряд Кастера был почти полностью уничтожен, сам Кастер убит. Крупнейшая горная система в Кордильерах Северной Америки, образующая их восточную часть. Простирается на территории США и Канады. Длина системы около 4890 км (от канадской провинции Альберта до центральной части штата Нью-Мексико). Ширина от 120 до 645 км. Высота от 1525 до 4399 м (высшая точка - г. Элберт [ Elbert, Mount] в штате Колорадо). Молодые горы: горнообразовательные процессы продолжаются в них до сих пор. С востока окаймлены Великими равнинами [ Great Plains], с запада - плато высотой до 2000 м. По характеру рельефа делятся на северные [Northern Rockies] (севернее 46 гр. сев. шир. - штаты Айдахо, Вашингтон, Монтана), средние [Middle Rockies, Central Rockies] (между 46 и 41 гр. сев. шир. - от Монтаны до северной Юты) и южные [Southern Rockies] (южнее 41 гр. сев. широты; южный Вайоминг, Колорадо, северная часть Нью-Мексико). Северные отличаются значительной протяженностью хребтов и межгорных долин, обилием ледников. Наиболее длинным является Передовой хребет [ Front Range]. Для средней части характерно множество коротких, но высоких хребтов со сглаженными вершинами - Уинд-Ривер [Wind River], Биг-Хорн [ Bighorn Mountains], Абсарока [ Absaroka Range]. Обширный Бассейн Вайоминга [Wyoming Basin] отделяет среднюю часть гор от южной. Здесь самые высокие хребты в Скалистых горах чередуются с широкими понижениями. К числу этих хребтов относятся горы Сан-Хуан [ San Juan Mountains], Сангре-де-Кристо [ Sangre de Cristo Range], Савач [Sawatch Range] и др. Почти на всем протяжении горы образуют водораздел между бассейнами Тихого океана и Атлантики; здесь берут начало крупнейшие реки континента - Миссури [ Missouri River], Рио-Гранде [ Rio Grande River], Колумбия [ Columbia River], Колорадо [ Colorado River], Снейк [ Snake River], Арканзас [ Arkansas River] и др. Скалистые горы являются своеобразным оазисом между пустынными районами на западе и равнинами на востоке. Растительный покров составляют преимущественно хвойные леса (дугласия [ Douglas fir], желтая сосна [ ponderosa pine], энгельманова ель [englemann spruce] и др.). Животный мир представлен медведем гризли [ grizzly bear], койотом [ coyote], толсторогим бараном [ bighorn; Rocky Mountain sheep], снежной козой [ Rocky Mountain goat] и др. Горы богаты полезными ископаемыми: каменный и бурый уголь, нефть, медь, золото, серебро, цинк, свинец, молибден, ванадий и др. Первыми из европейцев горы посетили испанцы в первой половине XVI в. В середине XVIII в. здесь побывали французы. В начале XIX в. Скалистые горы получили свое нынешнее название. Основные экспедиции американцев - Льюиса и Кларка [ Lewis and Clark Expedition] и З. Пайка [ Pike, Zebulon Montgomery] - пересекли горы после Луизианской покупки [ Louisiana Purchase]. Горы долго служили барьером для продвижения на Запад; первые поселения возникали на прилегающих к ним равнинах. К середине XIX в. переселенцы в Орегон [ Oregon Trail], маунтинмены [ mountain men] и мормоны [ Mormons] проложили здесь несколько известных троп через перевалы. Открытие золота у горы Пайкс-Пик [ Pike's Peak Gold Rush] (1858), а затем и других полезных ископаемых стало началом экономического развития региона и создания горных штатов [ Mountain States]. Сегодня экономика горных районов во многом построена на туризме - здесь расположено несколько национальных парков [ national park], популярные летние и зимние (горнолыжные) курорты. Развита деревообрабатывающая промышленность.
