Usually correlated with Gothic brunjô, breastplate, Middle High German brünne, Norse brynja, coat of mail, Middle English brynie, Scottish byrnie: a satisfactory enough derivation, and ultimatley from the same root as the first one given above (Indo-European bhru). Indeed Stokes says the Teutonic is borrowed from the Celtic. -
