Большинство планов длится ровно столько времени, за сколько актер выполнил бы то или иное действие в жизни. И сегодняшний зритель смотрит этот эпизод, затаив дыхание, потому что на его глазах происходит нечто подлинное, неподдельное, в реальном пространстве и времени. Тематически фильм доказывает глубинное равновесие героя, подвергая его самому чудовищному испытанию высотой, какое только можно себе представить. (Точно так же тема самоубийства, не затронутая в этом фильме, но часто встречающаяся у Ллойда, нужна ему для того, чтобы доказать внутреннюю стабильность и безмятежность героя.)Искусство Ллойда и его режиссеров-постановщиков основано на гармоничном и многозначительном использовании контрастов. Амбициозность у Ллойда – вовсе не извращенная страсть. Успех – вещь естественная для его персонажа; прямое следствие его здоровой реакции на вызовы судьбы. В Безопасности Херолд отнюдь не собирался лично совершать это восхождение: ситуация подтолкнула его взбираться вверх по этажам до самой крыши. В Херолде Ллойде (который, не забудем, пользовался в родной стране самой большой популярностью среди великих мастеров бурлеска) Америка узнавала себя. В этом человеке без изъянов и комплексов она разглядела и полюбила самого обычного героя, своеобразного антисупермена, чья невероятная живучесть дарила каждому ощущение уверенности и безопасности и обещала счастье. -
