¿To allow, to let o to permit?
Los tres verbos tienen significados muy parecidos. De los tres, to permit es el más formal y to let el más informal.
Cuando se menciona a la persona a la que va dirigido el permiso (o la prohibición), tanto to allow como to permit exigen el uso de infinitivo: El profesor no nos deja fumar en clase. The teacher doesn't allow/permit us to smoke in class. Si no se menciona a nadie en particular, van seguidos de gerundio: El profesor no permite fumar en clase. The teacher doesn't allow/permit smoking in class. De todas maneras, recuerda que el uso de la voz pasiva es muy común: No se permite fumar. Smoking is not allowed.
To let necesita un complemento y el infinitivo sin to: El profesor no nos deja fumar en clase. The teacher doesn't let us smoke in class. No se usa en voz pasiva. ➣ Ver nota en let.
