Zinnemann, Fred Zinnemann.

1907-1997

   Nacido en Viena, estudia leyes, pero entusiasmado por las peliculas de Sergei M. Eisenstein y de Erich Von Stroheim decide trasladarse a Paris a aprender la nueva tecnologia. Trabaja en Berlin como ayudante de camara, pero de nuevo, con la llegada del sonoro, siente la necesidad de aprender esa nueva tecnica por lo que se traslada a los Estados Unidos, donde traba conocimiento con Robert Flaherty. En calidad de ayudante de Flaherty vuelve a Europa con la intencion de rodar un documental sobre Asia central. De nuevo en Norteamerica, dirige una serie de cortos para Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, por uno de los cuales logra un Oscar en 1938. Su primer exito como director de largometrajes lo obtiene con The Seventh Cross (1944). Autor de uno de los westerns mas famosos de la historia del cine, la obra de este vienes transplantado a Hollywood no fue nunca, injustamente, muy apreciada por la critica, aunque algunos de sus filmes alcanzaron notoriedad, como el premiado De aqui a la eternidad (From Here to Eternity, 1953), por el que consiguio de nuevo el Oscar al mejor director, lo que hizo por tercera vez con Un hombre para la eternidad (A Man for All Sea sons, 1966). Solo ante el peligro es una pelicula que consigue una peculiar atmosfera que, sin duda, se encuentra en la base de su enorme exito. Oklahoma, por su parte, es un western musical que tiene el honor de ser el primer filme que utiliza el sistema de 70 mm llamado Todd-AO.

1) Один из традиционных жанров американского кинематографа, классическая тематика которого связана с освоением Запада [ West, Frontier] во второй половине XIX в. Первым вестерном считается "Большое ограбление поезда" ["The Great Train Robbery"] (1903) режиссера Э. С. Портера [Porter, E. C.]. В 1920-е большой популярностью пользовались короткие фильмы о Бронко Билли [ Bronco Billy], а в 1930-е появились новые герои, прототипами которых были реальные лица: Билли Кид [ Billy the Kid] и Джесси Джеймс [ Jesse James]. Настоящих высот жанр достиг с появлением фильмов Дж. Форда [ Ford, John], которого по праву считают "отцом" вестерна: "Дилижанс" ["Stagecoach"] (1939), "Моя дорогая Клементина" ["My Darling Clementine"] (1946), "Рио-Гранде" ["Rio Grande"] (1950) и др. Грея [Gray, Zane], Л. Шорта [Short, Luke] и др.). Впервые книги этой тематики появилась в грошовых романах [ dime novel] во второй половине XIX в. В первые десятилетия XX в. сложилось новое направление жанра, в котором большее внимание уделяется историческим деталям (О. Уистер [ Wister, Owen], А. Б. Гатри [Guthrie, A. B.], Л. Ламур [L'Amour, Louis] и др.)

   La aparente ligereza de las peliculas de Howard Hawks es enganosa. Detras de unos filmes que, a primera vista, solo pretenden entretener al espectador, hay mucho mas; mas de lo que pueden ofrecer no pocos directores intelectualmente comprometidos. Por eso, hay que afirmar rotundamente que Howard Hawks es uno de los realizadores mas grandes del cine americano y del cine en general, a la altura de los diez o doce mas ilustres de todos los tiempos. La cosa empezo en el verano de 1916, cuando un joven estudiante de ingenieria, buen de portista, aficionado a los automoviles, decidio aprovechar las vacaciones de verano trabajando en Fa mous Players-Lasky, la futura Paramount, como ascensorista. Un ano despues, ya graduado, vuelve, ahora para colaborar en la produccion como decorador, montador, director de casting, ayudante de direccion y todo lo que fuera necesario hasta que, despues de algun nuevo parentesis, se consolida como guionista, lo que facilita su paso a la direccion, que tuvo lugar en 1926 con la produccion Fox The Road to Glory. De las ocho peliculas mudas que realizo, la mas “hawksiana” es, sin duda, Una novia en cada puerto (A Girl in Every Port, 1928), pero el director es, sin discusion, un hombre del sonoro, acaso por la esplendida utilizacion de los dialogos que lo caracterizo, y que se pone de manifiesto de forma extrema en La fiera de mi nina (Bringing Up Baby, 1938), una de las cumbres de la comedia. Todo aquello que toco Hawks, lo dignifico: la comedia, como se ha puesto de manifiesto, pero tambien el cine negro, con El sueno eterno (The Big Sleep, 1946), el filme de aventuras, con Hatari! (1962) y, desde luego, el western, genero en el que cada una de sus incursiones originaba una obra maestra. Rio Bravo es, sin ningun genero de dudas, una de las dos o tres mejores peliculas de un genero tan inagotable como la vida. Al parecer, el origen de la pelicula hay que encontrarlo en la irritacion que le producia a Hawks Solo ante el peligro (High Noon, Fred Zinnemann, 1952), cuyo metraje discurre en la tarea de encontrar ayuda para que el sheriff del lugar pueda enfrentarse a unos pistoleros que se encuentran camino de la ciudad. La idea motriz de Hawks, permanente a lo largo de toda su filmografia, de mostrar a personas (preferentemente hombres porque las mujeres son, sobre todo, causa de conflictos) que estan realizando su trabajo y lo realizan lo mejor que saben, es la historia de todos y cada uno de sus westerns, particularmente de su falsa coleccion de “rios”, formada por dos peliculas en lugar de cuatro, porque Rio Rojo es, en realidad, Red River, y en Rio de sangre ni siquiera aparece la palabra en el titulo original. Solo Rio Bravo y Rio Lobo, peliculas fronterizas donde las haya, responden a la idea que acuno el termino unificador para las cuatro peliculas. Estas dos ultimas, y la estupenda El Dorado, remake mas o menos encubierto de Rio Bravo, si que permanecen unidas por estrechos lazos cronologicos, estilisticos y tematicos.

   Victima de la lista negra elaborada por el siniestro Comite de Actividades Antinorteamericanas, Vor haus, que ya habia ganado cierto prestigio como di rector en Inglaterra durante los anos 30, se vio obligado a trabajar en los anos 50 como ayudante de di reccion en peliculas importantes rodadas en Europa por directores norteamericanos, como Vacaciones en Roma (Roman Holi day, William Wyler, 1953), La condesa descalza (The Barefoot Contessa, Joseph L. Mankiewicz, 1954) o Historia de una monja (The Nun’s Story, Fred Zinnemann, 1959), siempre con el seudonimo de Piero Mussetta, que podia evitar incomodas situaciones. Volvio de nuevo a vivir en Inglaterra, donde murio. Lo mejor que se dijo de su labor como director corrio a cargo de David Lean, quien reconocio la influencia que sobre el habia ejercido Vorhaus.
