Vive una etapa brillante como rea lizador entre 1954 y 1965, etapa en la que dirige comedias, melodramas, un estu pendo filme negro, La calle 99 (Pushover, 1954), que supone su primera colaboracion con la actriz Kim Novak, y un magnifico musical, Mi hermana Elena (My Sister Eileen, 1955). Es conocido el apasionado amor, no correspondido, que sintio hacia Kim Novak, a la que dirigio en cuatro peliculas.
