       Neoyorquino, lo encontramos por primera vez en los titulos de credito de una pelicula en 1936, como ayudante de direccion de Nate Watt en La rueda del destino (Hoppalong Cassidy Returns). Continuara en este cometido, siempre para Paramount, a las ordenes del citado Watt, David Selman, Edward Ven turini, Howard Bretherton y, sobre todo, Lesley Selan der. Salvo en una ocasion, las peliculas son entregas su cesivas de la serie protagonizada por William Boyd. Cuando, en 1941, pasa a la direccion, no es de ex tranar que su obra, westerns en su inmensa mayoria, se centre en series y seriales con actores como el citado Boyd, Charles Starrett (Durango Kid) o Johnny Mack Brown. Trabaja para Columbia y, en menor me dida, para Monogram. Entre 1941, ano de su debut detras de las camaras, y 1945, cuando empieza su conjunto de peliculas con Charles Starrett, existe un vacio que no he podido llenar, en el que, segun algunas fuentes, realiza tres westerns, Texas Rifles, Phantom Outlaws y Cattle Call, todos ellos de 1944.

  • 17 Enright, Ray

    1896-1965
       Nacido en Anderson, Indiana, a los cinco anos se traslada a Los Angeles con su familia. Aunque em pieza en los Estudios Keystone de Mack Sennett co mo montador y, despues, creador de gags, Ray En right es un hombre del sonoro. Director en 1927 a sueldo de Warner hasta 1941, desarrolla una carrera como realizador que no es excesivamente distinguida, aunque tiene alguna interesante pelicula y, en particular, algun interesante western como Coroner Creek o Montana. En los anos 40 pasa a trabajar pa ra otras productoras pero vuelve en los 50 a Warner Brothers, donde trabaja con presupuestos me dios, ni demasiado limitados ni demasiado generosos.

  • 18 Fuller, Samuel

    1912-1997
       Cineasta excesivo, con el cine en la sangre, Samuel Fuller es uno de los grandes, y semidesconocidos hoy, realizadores norteamericanos. Nacido en Worcester, Massachusetts, periodista de formacion, es novelista cronologicamente antes que cineasta, lo que le facilita la entrada en el mundo del cine como guionista, a mediados de los anos 30. No sera hasta 1949 cuando debutaria en la direccion con Balas vengadoras. Casi desde su primer filme, parece dispuesto a poner en practica el concepto del cine que haria explicito en su pequena intervencion en la pelicula de Jean-Luc Godard Pierrot, el loco (Pierrot le fou, 1965): «Una pelicula es como una batalla, amor, odio, accion, violencia, muerte; en una palabra, emocion ». No es de extranar, pues, que cada una de sus peliculas belicas sea una obra maestra, desde Casco de acero (The Steel Helmet, 1950), pasando por Invasion en Birmania (Merrill’s Marauders, 1962), hasta Uno rojo: division de choque (The Big Red One, 1979). Pero tambien lo son sus historias criminales, empezando por la magistral Manos peligrosas (Pickup on South Street, 1953), casi bressoniana, siguiendo con la iconoclasta La casa de bambu (House of Bamboo, 1955), y terminando con Underworld U.S.A. (1961). Implacable en el desarrollo de sus dramas humanos (Corredor sin retorno, Shock Corridor, 1963; Una luz en el hampa, The Naked Kiss, 1964), sus cuatro westerns, dos tempranos, dos de madurez, son ejemplares en su coherencia, tanto interna como formal. Maestro de las angulaciones de camara arriesgadas y de los primeros planos asfixiantes, la experiencia de acercarse a las peliculas firmadas por Samuel Fuller es impagable.

    1909-1971
       Montador, entre 1937 y 1971, ano de su fallecimiento, trabajo con Preston Sturges en casi todas sus peliculas de los anos 40, y con Howard Hawks en tres ocasiones, ya al final de las carreras de ambos, director y montador. Dirige, en 1946 y en 1951/52, un total de cinco peliculas, cuatro de ellas westerns. Rodo un remake de The Virginian, la pelicula que inmortalizo a Gary Cooper, muy por debajo del original.

    1906-1985
       Jesse Hibbs hace su aprendizaje como ayudante de direccion en los anos cuarenta, lo que no parece haberle sido de utilidad en su paso a la realizacion en 1953, ya que es un director rutinario que en los ultimos anos de su actividad profesional se paso a la television, para la que dirige un buen punado de episodios de series de exito como Perry Mason o Ironside. Tra bajo extensamente con Audie Murphy, he roe de la Se gunda Guerra Mundial reconvertido en actor. Se asocia su nombre, basicamente, a los Es tudios Uni versal.
