The financial assistance which about a quarter of German students receive from the state. Whether they are entitled to a BAföG grant or loan (federal education and training assistance), and how much they get, depend on the students' and their parents' financial circumstances. Half of this assistance is awarded in a form of a grant, and the rest as an interest-free loan which usually has to be repaid within five years of the end of the maximum entitlement period.
