16 ἀκιδνός
Grammatical information: adj.Meaning: `weak, small' (Od.).Derivatives: ἀκιδρωπάζω ἀμβλυωπῶ H.Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]Etymology: Unexplained. The element - δν- may point to a substr. word. We find ἀκιδρός (Cyr.). Therefore Fur. 388 assumes a substr. word with ν\/ρ, though the interchange is rare (cf. πρόκνις). P. 360 he compares σκιδαρόν ἀραιόν (`thin, slender') H., which cannot be considered certain. One compares also ἀκιρός `weak' (Theoc.); cf. ἀκιρῆ ἀσθενῆ, οὐκ ἐπιτεταμένα H. and ἀκιρῶς εὐλαβῶς, ἀτρέμας H. ( ἀκιρός βορρᾶς H. cannot belong here). For δ\/ρ Fur. 388 only gives σίβδα, where it will be conditioned by the preceding β.Page in Frisk: 1,53Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > ἀκιδνός

17 βλένᾰ
Grammatical information: f.Meaning: `mucous discharge, μύξα' (Hp.).Other forms: βλέννος n. (Arist.). πλένναι μύξαι H.; βλένα μύξα. οἱ δε δία τοῦ π πλένα καὶ πλέννα τὰ ἀσθενῆ καὶ δυσκίνητα H.; πλεννεραί = μυξώδεις (Hp. ap. Gal. 19, 131). ( πληνώδης ἁσθενης H. perh. to be read πλεν(ν)-, Fur. 144).Derivatives: βλεννώδης `slimy, mucous' (Hp.). Also βλεν(ν)ός `id., idiot' (Epich.); with regularly withdrawn accent βλέννος m. a fish (Sophr., H. as explanation of σιαλίς), s. Strömberg 29, Grilli Studi itfilcla. 33 (1961)201f.Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]Etymology: The gemination can be expressive (Meillet BSL 26, 15f.). βλέννος can go back on *μλεδ-σ-νος (Schwyzer 322, Lejeune Traité de phon. 105; diff. Specht KZ 62, 213f.) connecting Skt. ū́rṇa-mradas- `soft as wool' (= Gr. *-βλεδής), pres. mr̥dnāti, mardati, also ( vi)- mradati (\< *- mled-eti) `soften' (to mr̥dú- `soft'). Cf. further MIr. blind `slime from the mouth of a dead man', Pok. 718. DELG: "pour le sens ces rapprochements ne s'imosent pas". Frisk: "Der sehr beschränkte Wert dieser Kombinationen liegt indessen auf der Hand." - As Fur. 144 points out, the variations π\/β, νν\/ν prove a Pre-Gr. word. If the -α is short, π\/ βλενα cannot be IE\/Gr, whereas this ending is frequent in Pre-Greek. - The words still exists in Mod. 19 κάρφω
Grammatical information: v.Meaning: ` dry up, wither, wrinkle' (Od.).Derivatives: 1. κάρφος n. `arid stalk, twig, halm, hay' (IA.); καρφίον dimin. (Dsc.), καρφηρός `consisting of arid stalks' (E. Ion 172; cf. αὑχμηρός, αὑστηρός a. o., Chantraine Formation 232f.), καρφίτης `id.' (AP), καρφώδης `full of κ.' (gloss.), καρφεῖα n. pl. = κάρφη pl. (Nic. Al. 118); καρφόομαι (AP) = καρφύνεσθαι ξηραίνεσθαι, φθείρεσθαι H.; s. Fraenkel Denom. 294. 2. κάρφη f. `hay' (X., Arr.). 3. καρφαλέος `arid' (Il.; as αὑαλέος; perh. from κάρφος, cf. Chantraine 253f.). 4. κατακαρφ-ής `withered' (Nik. Fr. 70, 9).Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]X [probably]Etymology: To the zero grade thematic root present κάρφω (with κάρφος for older *κέρφος?; s. below) the other languages have no agreement. Similarity is seen in a in Balto-Slavic and Germanic wide-spread groep, e. g. Russ. koróbitь `curve, bend', refl. `curve oneself, writhe', beside which with anlaut. s- skórbnutь `writhe', Lith. skrembù, skrèbti `get a thin crust, get stiff', NIsl. herpa-st `draw together convulsively', OIcel. skorpna `writhe, wither' etc., IE. ( s)kerbh-, ( s)krebh-; Pok. 948f. "m. reicher Lit. und buntem Vergleichsmaterial" (Frisk); also Vasmer Russ. et. Wb. s. koróbitь and skórblyj, W.-Hofmann s. corbis. Unclear remain the Hesych -glosses κορφῶς ἐλαφρῶς, κέρβαλα ἀσθενῆ (improb. v. Blumenthal Hesychst. 40f.).. - "Die expressive Wortgruppe hat offenbar lautliche Entgleisungen und Verschränkungen erlitten" (Frisk). "Les rapprochments proposés par les étymologistes ne donnent satisfaction ni pour la forme ni pour le sens" (DELG). Cf. also κράμβη, - ός. It seems then that the word is non-IE and it may well be Pre-Greek. Note κορφῶς.Page in Frisk: 1,795Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > κάρφω

20 κλαμαράν
Grammatical information: acc. sg. f?Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]X [probably]Etymology: Belonging to the same semantic and emotional group as κλαδαρός (s. v.), κλαμαρός has the appearance of a popular innovation, so that the comparison with Skt. klā́myati `get tired' (see Mayrhofer KEWA s. v.) a. o. (Pok. 602f., W.-Hofmann s. clēmēns) is endangered.Page in Frisk: 1,865Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > κλαμαράν
