Untersuchungen 1863 p. 43)① a supporting portion, ordinarily cylindrical, of a structure, pillar, column lit. στῦλοι πυρός (En 18:11; 21:7; sing. Ex 13:21f; 14:24) Rv 10:1. In imagery (Philo, Migr. Abr. 124)② a pers. or community recognized for spiritual leadership, pillar, support ποιήσω αὐτὸν στ. ἐν τῷ ναῷ τοῦ θεοῦ I will make him a pillar in the temple of God Rv 3:12 (στῦλοι in the temple 3 Km 7:3=Jos., Ant. 8, 77). Hence fig. of the leaders of the Jerusalem church: James, Cephas, John Gal 2:9 (cp. Eur., Iph. Taur. 57 στῦλοι οἴκων εἰσὶ παῖδες ἄρσενες. Vi. Aesopi G 106 P. [the word is prob. related to Goth. sauls = στύλος; Icel. súl, meaning a prop, stay], a king, prince; this word occurs only once in old poets, viz. in compd himin-sjóli, heaven-prop, heaven-defender (?), an epithet of Thor, Þd. 9; it does not even appear in Edda (Gl.) among the synonyms of kings and heroes; the word then re-appears in Skíða R. 50 = king; and (from that poem?) in Run. Gramm. Island.; it became freq. in mod. lays and rímur, e. g. Úlf. 1. 21; 2. 76, 81, 88, 3. 18, 44, 4. 20, 50, 5. 10, 7. 21.2. sjóli occurs once as a pr. name on a Swedish Runic stone.
