35 γέφῡρα
γέφῡραGrammatical information: f.Meaning: `bridge'; on other meanings in Homer s. below (Il.)Derivatives: γεφυρίς πόρνη τις ἐπὶ γεφύρας, ὡς ` Ηρακλέων H. (also with another meaning); denomin. γεφυρόω `make a bridge' (Ion.-Att.; Il. `dam up' s. below',) with γεφύρωσις (Str.), γεφύρωμα `bridge' (J.), γεφυρωτής `builder of b.' (Plu.); γεφυρίζω `abuse' (Plu.), acc. to H. "ἐπεὶ ἐν Έλευσῖνι ἐπὶ τῆς γεφύρας τοῖς μυστηρίοις καθεζόμενοι ἔσκωπτον τοὺς παριόντας"; from there γεφυρισμός (Str.), γεφυριστής (Plu.).Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]Etymology: The variation of the first consonant suggests labiovelar gʷ-, but then the γ- cannot be explained. The evidently cognate Arm. kamurǰ `bridge' gives also unsurmountable problems if the word were IE. Beekes, Glotta ?? (2004), ??-?? follows Fur. 97 etc. in connecting Hattic hammuruwa `beam'. The word is an Anatolian loan (or Pre-Greek?). An original meaning `beam' fits all passages in Homer, and notably the expression πολέμοιο γεφύρας, where it has the same meaning as phalanx (`tree, beam'). The form with - ι- and - ου- point to Pre-Greek.Page in Frisk: 1,302-303Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > γέφῡρα

36 κασαλβάς
κασαλβάς, - άδοςGrammatical information: f.Meaning: `strumpet' (Ar.);Other forms: κασσαβάς EM Also κασωρίς with κασωρεύω (Lyc.) and κασωρῖτις `id.' (Hippon., Antiph.), κασώριον (Ar. Eq. 1285) = κασωρικὸς δόμος (uncertain conj. in Hippon. 74); κασαύρα κασωρίς, πόρνη, also κασαυράς, with κασαυρεῖα (pl.) H. Short form κάσσα (Lyc.).Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]Etymology: Vulgar words. (Hardly connected with κασᾶς s. v.; cf. Lat. scortum and the lit. in W.-Hofmann s. v.). Formation quite unknown; cf. Chantraine Formation 352. - I see no reason whatever to connect κασᾶς `blanket'. Of course, κασ-ωρ- continues κασ-αυρ- (a well known development in Pre-Greek; Fur. 301 n. 32). The form κασαυρ- may continue κασαβ-, with β varying with υ, F. The relation between κασαλβ- and κασαβ- is unclear; Fur. thinks that the λ is secondary (305f), but his evidence is very small. I tend to think that the λ is old. I suggest that κασαλβ- originates from * kasalʷ-, with a labialized l ; the lʷ may have become easily w \> b.Page in Frisk: 1,796-797Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > κασαλβάς

37 λάσται
Grammatical information: f.Other forms: Shortened form λάστρις (EM 159,30).Derivatives: Besides λάσταυρος ' κίναιδος' (Theopomp., AP), ἡμι-λάσταυρος (Men.), hardly after κένταυ-ρος, cf. H.: κένταυροι... καὶ οἱ παιδερασται(?).Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]Etymology: Fur. 383 connects λασιτός κίναιδος and λεσιτὸς πόρνη. The root λασ- is clearly Pre-Greek. 38 λυπτά
Grammatical information: f.Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]Etymology: Hoffmann BB 21, 139 connected Skt. lubdha- `avaricious, desirous, eager' (with Lat. lubet, libet, NHG lieb etc.), which is phonetically impossible. The glosse is suspected. Fur. 316 compares λύπη `id.', also λούπα `id.' Eust. `92`, 63 and `961,16; he also connects λίπτω (s.v.); for the ending cf. θάπτα; so the word is Pre-Greek..Page in Frisk: 2,146Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > λυπτά

39 λωγάνιον
Grammatical information: n.Meaning: `dewlap (of oxen)' (Luc. Lex. 3, sch.), also λωγάλιον (H.; cf. Specht Ursprung 351 n. 1) and λογάνιον (Suid.).Origin: XX [etym. unknown]Etymology: Perhaps as "what hangs down (skin)" from λαγαίω, λαγαρός (s. vv.); the intermediate forms cannot be determined (*λώγανον, *λώγη?). Here (and to λάγνος `lewd') also λωγάς πόρνη H.; Good argumentation by Persson Beitr. 1, 134 a. 2, 939; on λωγάνιον ibd. 1, 131. Porzig Satzinhalte 225, Wyss - συνη 25), - της `id.' (EM, Sch.); μαχλικός `like a lascivious woman' (Man.); μαχλεύομαι `be lascivious' in μεμαχλευμένον ἦτορ (Man.), μαχλῶντες πορνεύοντες H.Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]X [probably]Etymology: Barytonon wit λο-suffix as κτίλος, φαῦλος, ἕωλος; further isolated. By Prellwitz s.v. (after Uhlenbeck) compared with Skt. (Ved.) makhá- attribute of gods of unknown meaning (s. Mayrhofer EWAia 2, 288). Fur. 211 n. 48 compares Arm. mahaz `lascicious' (from Asia Minor?). The word, with this meaning, my well be Pre-Greek (the word has also been compared with Βάκχος, ib. 211).Page in Frisk: 2,187Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > μάχλος
