ξανθός, gelb, in mancherlei Abstufungen, gelblich, bräunlich, goldgelb, blond; die Farbe des Feuers und der Sonne; gewöhnliches Beiwort des Menelaos, der Blonde, von seinen Haaren; nach anderen von der bräunlichen Leibesfarbe der Helden, deren Haut durch Sonnenbrand und durch die Einwirkung der Luft, da sie den ganzen Tag unter freiem Himmel zubrachten, gebräunt ist; es haben das Beiwort noch Meleager und Rhadamanthys; auch von der Demeter und der Agamede; auch von Frauen, = erste Erkl. richtiger; es wird dem Achilleus auch ausdrücklich ξανϑὴ κόμη beigelegt, wie dem Odysseus ξανϑαὶ τρίχες. Daß blonde Haare als ein Schmuck idealer Jugendschönheit gegolten haben, sieht man daraus, daß der ewig jugendliche Apollo blond ist, u. daß auch auf der attischen Bühne blondes Haar das Kennzeichen der Heldenjünglinge blieb.
