ἜΘω, ich bin gewohnt, ich pflege, bei Homer zweimal: Iliad. 9, 540 σῠν ἄγριον, ὃς κακὰ πόλλ' ἔρδεσκεν ἔϑων Οἰνῆος ἀλωήν, vgl. Scholl. Herodian., welcher eine Lesart ἔδων erwähnt, und Scholl. Aristonic., (ἡ διπλῆ,) ὅτι οἱ γλωσσογράφοι (Lehrs Aristarch. ed. 2 p. 37 Sengebusch Hom. diss. 1 p. 52) τὸ ἔϑων ἀποδιδόασι βλάπτων. ἔστι δὲ ἐξ ἔϑους ἐπιφοιτῶν. Diese Erklärung, = »das Grundstück gewohnheitsmäßig (regelmäßig) heimsuchend«, hängt vielleicht damit zusammen, daß ἤϑεα, ein mit ἔϑω unzweifelhaft verwandtes Wort (Curtius Grundz. d. Griech. Etymol. 2. Ausg. S. 226), bei Homer nur einen gewohnten Aufenthaltsort von Thieren bezeichnet, einen Ort, nach welchem sie zu gehn pflegen, um dort zu weilen, Iliad. 6, 511. 15, 268 Odyss. 14, 411; ἔϑω wird bei Homer in der zweiten Stelle von Menschen gebraucht, Iliad. 16, 260 σφήκεσσιν εἰνοδίοις, οὓς παῖδες ἐριδμαίνωσιν ἔϑοντες, νηπίαχοι; auch hier erklärte Aristarch ἔϑοντες = ἐξ ἔϑους συνεχῶς ἐπιφοιτῶντες, s. Scholl. Aristonic. vs. 261 u. vgl. Apoll. Lex. Hom. p. 63, 16. – Zu ἔϑω rechnet man das häufig vorkommende perfect. εἴωθα, ich bin gewohnt, ich pflege, cum infin., Ionisch ἔωϑα. Dies perf. erscheint bei Homer achtmal: εἴωϑε c. inf. Iliad. 5, 766 Odyss. 17, 394; ἔωϑεν c. inf. Iliad. 8, 408. 422; particip. εἰωϑώς c. inf. Iliad. 6, 508. 15, 265; εἰωϑότες c. inf.
