2 γαμφηλαί
Grammatical information: f. pl.Meaning: `jaws of animals' (Il.).Other forms: γναμφαί γνάθοι H.Derivatives: Backformation γαμφαί (Lyc.).Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]X [probably]Etymology: Cf. τράχηλος etc. Generally connected with γόμφος<< (s.v.), γομφίος, but the α-vocalism is problematic: neither a popular word nor zero grade *γαφ- with restored nasal; nor influence from γαμψός or γναμπτήρ (CEG 1) seems sufficient explanation. The suffix - ηλ- occurs in Pre-Greek (Beekes, Pre-Greek), so the word may be Pre-Greek. - Pedersen (s. WP. 1, 534) pointed to Russ. gubá `lip' etc..Page in Frisk: 1,288Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > γαμφηλαί

3 γναθμός
Grammatical information: m.Meaning: `jaw' (Hom.)Derivatives: PN of a parasite Γνάθων, with Γναθώνειος, Γναθωνίδης, Γναθωνάριον (Plu.). Denom. γναθόω `hit the jaw' (Phryn. Com.).Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]Etymology: γναθμός from γνάθος after λαιμός, βρεχμός, ὀφθαλμός. - Always compared with Lith. žándas `id.', Latv. zuôds `chin, sharp side'; the Lith. acute was explained from a laryngeal, which is impossible for Greek; it can also have been caused by a following d (Winter-Kortlandt law). A preform *gn̥h₂dʰ- would have given *γνᾱθος, *gn̥h₂edʰ- *γαναθος; so a laryngeal is impossible for Greek, nor can - να- be derived from any other PIE form. (The Lithuanian form, which has a quite different structure, cannot be cognate.) The form must therefore be non-IE, i.e. Pre-Greek. Further connection with γένυς is improbable, as this is IE. Macedonian κάναδοι σιαγόνες, γνάθοι H. has also often been compared; this may well be cognate, as a Pre-Greek form; does it stand for *κναδοι? (with epenthesis? for which see Fur. 378); it has also been connected with κνώδων, κνώδαλον.Page in Frisk: 1,316Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > γναθμός

4 γνάμπτω
Grammatical information: v.Meaning: `bend' (Il.).Derivatives: γναμπτήρ `jaw' (Androm. ap. Gal.), cf. γναμφαί s.v. γαμφηλαί; γνάμψις `bending' (EM). Without (dissimilated?) (second) nasal γνάπτει κάμπτει and γναπτός = γναμπτός H.Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]Etymology: It is mostly stated that γνάμπτω was influenced by κάμπτω (cf. κνάμπτω), so that all explanations are uncertain. But γνάμπτω has not the κ- of κάμπτω, nor can the - ν- have been taken from there. Note that γναμπ- cannot have a IE preform (see on γνάθος). But κάμπτω too does not look safely IE. However, a Pre-Greek process giving and `inserted' -ν is not known to me. (Did κν- give γν-?) (The consequences of the remark of N.G. in R.Ph. 70 (1996) =CEG 1 s.v. γνάμπτω; Κλυταιμ(ν)ηστρα?) are unclear to me.Page in Frisk: 1,316Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > γνάμπτω
