By the ancients usu. connected with πύθομαι `rot' (h. Ap. 371 ff., Paus. 10, 6,5) after the rotting of the by Apollon killed dragon, after S. (OT 70 f., 603 f. a.o.) however referred to πυθέσθαι, πυνθάνομαι, which was already by Str. 9, 419 doubted because of the length of the υ in Πυθω. Extensively Lauffer P. -W. 24, 571 ff. -- The word is no doubt Pre-Greek.Page in Frisk: 2,622Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > Πῡθώ
