    Italian architectural designer and town planner.

    Sant'Elia studied in Milan and in Bologna. In 1912 he began work in Milan, where he became part of the futurist movement in architecture. In the short time before the outbreak of the First World War, Sant'Elia began to create his designs for the city of the future; he was a talented draughtsman and made hundreds of imaginative drawings to illustrate his ideas.
    Fascinated by the possibilities of technology and by building in the USA, he was a visionary of future modern architecture. He planned cities for Italy, and in 1914 many of his drawings were shown at an exhibition of the Nuove Tendenze group in Milan. His Città Nuova was included; it envisaged electric power, skyscrapers, pedestrian precincts and traffic moving on overhead roadways at two and three different levels—a separation of pedestrian and wheeled traffic put forward by Leonardo da Vinci four centuries earlier in his sketchbooks. Sant'Elia was a socialist and developed his schemes as part of his suggestions for an ideal society.
    He was killed in action in 1916, but his drawings have survived and have influenced later work.

       Nacido en Estambul, entonces Constantinopla, Elia Kazan es uno de los nombres importantes del cine americano. De origen turco-griego, hijo de un comerciante de alfombras, emigra a Estados Unidos con su familia en 1911. Sus origenes artisticos son teatrales, primero como actor, luego como director. Funda, en 1947, el celebre Actor’s Studio. Simpa tizante izquierdista, su claudicacion con el Comite de Actividades Antinorteamericanas le valio, en lo sucesivo, una triste fama, que no debe empanar su im portancia como cineasta, actividad en la que se inicia en 1945 con Lazos humanos (A Tree Grows in Brooklyn). Su esplendida La ley del silencio (On the Waterfront, 1954) trata de ser, en una segunda lectura, una autojustificacion de su actitud ante el citado Comite. La filmografia de Elia Kazan en su totalidad es altamente estimulante. Especial mente conmovedora, su America, America (1963) es, con toda probabilidad, una de las grandes peliculas de todos los tiempos. Los dos westerns que dirigio son, sin duda, atipicos pero muy dignos de consideracion.

В 1944 участвовал в создании Актерской студии [ Actors Studio, The], работавшей по системе Станиславского ["The Method"], через которую прошли многие звезды театра и кино США. Его постановки пьес "Трамвай "Желание"" ["A Streetcar Named Desire"] (1947) (позднее экранизирована им же) и "Смерть коммивояжера" ["Death of a Salesman"] (1949) вошли в классику мирового театра.
