ernь Grammatical information: f. iPage in Trubačev: -Old Russian:Lithuanian:er̃nis `wolverine' [m io] 2Comments: Young (2001: 163-164) links Lith. er̃nis `wolverine' to ORu. renь `hatred, malice, spite' and derives these words from Pokorny's root * er- `sich in Bewegung setzen, erregen (auch seelisch, ärgern, reizen' (IEW 326-327). LIV (238, 303) distinguishes between * h₁er- `wohin gelangen, geraten' and * h₃er- (299) `sich in (Fort-)bewegung setzen'. Formally * ertь may only belong to the former root, which is semantically less attractive, but it should be noted that the distinction between the roots is not always clear. -
124 κεραός
Grammatical information: adj.Meaning: `horned', sec. `made of horn' (Il.).Origin: IE [Indo-European] [574] *ḱerh₂- `head, horn'Etymology: *κεραϜός is identical with several words for `deer' and other horned animals: "Lat. cervus (like κεραός IE. *ḱerh₂u̯-o-), Celt., e. g. Welsh carw `deer' (IE. *ḱr̥h₂u̯-o-), Alb. ka `ox', Slav., e. g. Russ. koróva, Serb. krȁva `cow' (frrom *ḱorh₂uā, not from IE. *ḱōru̯-ā) with western treatment of ḱ as in Alb. ka; Illyrian LW [loanword]?, s. Porzig Gliederung 175), Lith. kárvė `id.' (sec. ē-stem); besides with palatalisation and zero grade OPr. sirwis `roe', falls nicht vielmehr zu lit. šir̃vas `grauschimmelig' (vgl. zu νεβρός). - A parallel formation is the German. name of the deer, e. g. OHG hiruz, IE. *ḱeru-d-. Both from a word for `horn', which is seen in Av. srū- f., Hitt. karau̯-ar n.; [not here κόρυδος, κορυφή, κόρυς}. See W.-Hofmann s. cervus, and Sommer Nominalkomp. 20 n. 2. - Further s. κέρας; Nussbaum, Head and Horn, 1986,Page in Frisk: 1,825-826Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > κεραός

Ap., pap.), as νομο-θεσία a.o., formal from ὁρο-θέ-της (gloss.), comp. of ὅρον θεῖναι with τη-suffix; often as 2. member, e.g. δί-ωρος `with two boundary stones' (Arc. Terminus (D.H., Plu.); 4. ὁρικός `belonging to definition' (Arist.); 5. ὁρ-αία τεκτονική = gruma, - ιαῖος λίθος (gloss.); 6. ὁρίζω, aor. - ίσαι (Ion. οὑρ-), often w. prefix, e.g. δι- ( ἐπι-δι- etc.), ἀφ-, περι-, προσ-, `to border, to demarcate, to separate, to determine, to define' (IA.) with ( ἀφ-, περι-, δι-)ὅρισμα ( οὔρ-) `limitation, border' (Hdt., E.), ( ἀφ-, περι- etc.) ὁρισμός `limitation, determination etc.' (Att.), ( δι-)ὅρισις (Pl., Arist.), ὁρισ-τής m. `landmarker' (Att., Tab. (h) όρϜος (= Corc.) can stand for still older *ϜόρϜος (Schwyzer 306 a. 226 f.) and can be connected wih Lat. urvāre ( amb-) `surround with a (boundary)furrow' (Fest. from Enn., Dig.) as a cognate; the basic noun urvus `circuitus civitatis' (gloss.; transm. urus) can agree except for he ablaut (IE *u̯r̥u̯os against *u̯oru̯os). Here also Osc. uruvú from PItal. * urvā, if with Schulze ZGLE 549 n. 1 a.o. `boundaryfurrow, border' (cf. Vetter Hb. d. ital. Dial. 1, 442). Further connection wih ἐρύω `draw' (s.v.) is then possible. -- Also an alternative basis *ὄρϜος (w. second. asper) can be combined with Lat. urvus (then from *r̥u̯os; to ὀρύ-σσω?, s.v.). -- WP. 1, 293 a. 2, 352 f., W.-Hofmann s. urvus w. further lit.
