46 ἴκτερος
Grammatical information: m., often pl.Derivatives: ἰκτερικός, ἰκτερώδης `jaundiced, regarding jaundice' (medic.), also ἰκτεριώδης `id.' (Hp., Dsc.; after ἰκτεριάω) and ἰκτερόεις `id.' (Nic.; Schwyzer 527); ἰκτερῖτις f. `rosmarin' (Ps.-Dsc.; used as remedy; Redard Les noms grecs en - της 72, Strömberg Wortstudien 29), - ίτης `id.' ( Gloss.); ἰκτερίας name of a yellow stone (Plin.; like καπνίας a. o., Chantr. Form. 94). Denomin. ἰκτερόομαι (Hp., Gal.), ἰκτεριάω (M. Ant., S. E.; formation Schwyzer 732) `have jaundice'.Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]X [probably]Etymology: Formation as ὕδερος, χολέρα (Schwyzer 481, Chantr. Form. 228), further unknown. The connection with ἴκτις, ἰκτῖνος (Prellwitz BB 30, 176, Wb. 195; because of the colour) is taken up again by Grošelj Živa Ant. 6, 236f. assuming a colour-root ἰκ- `yellow, green' (with also ἰκμαλέον χλωρόν, ὑγρόν H. [?]). Wrong old attempts in Bq (also Walleser WuS 14, 165 u. 173). 47 πράσον
Grammatical information: n.Meaning: `leek, Allium porrum', also of a kind of seaweed like leek (com., Thphr.).Compounds: Compp., e.g. πρασο-ειδής `leek-like', from the colour (Hp., Arist.), θαλασσό-πρασον n. of a seaweed (Ath. Mech.).Derivatives: 1. πράσ-ιος (Pl.), - ινος (Arist., LXX), - ιανός (M. Ant.), - ώδης (Thphr.) `leek-colour, blue-green' (Capelle RhM 101, 35); 2. - ῖτις f. n. of a stone, after the colour (Thphr.; Redard 59f.); 3. - ιον n. plant-name `horehound, Marrubium etc.' (Hp., Arist., Thphr.; Andrews ClassPhil. 56, 76); from this πρασίτης οἶνος? (v.l. in Dsc. 5, 48; Redard 98); 4. πρασιά, Ion. - ιή, mostly pl. - ιαί, f. `garden-bed', prop. "leek-bed" (Od., hell.), pl. att. Demos and town in Laconia (Th.), with - ιάζομαι, - ιόομαι `to be divided in beds' (Aq.); Scheller Oxytonierung 67; 5. πρασίζω `to be leek-coloured' (Dsc.); 6. Πρασσαῖος m. nickname of a frog (Batr.; - σσ- hypocoristic; ?).Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]Etymology: The traditional identification with Lat. porrum (since Fick and Curtius) would lead to IE *pr̥som; the remarkable maintenance of the - σ- reminds of δασύς (s.v. w. lit.) beside Lat. densus. For a loan from a common source (Schwyzer 58) factual considerations can be adduced; cf. Schrader-Nehring Reallex. 2, 710ff., to this Vycichl Sprache 9, 21 f. (Anatol.-Sum.[?]). Further lit. w. other hypotheses (to be rejected) in WP. 2, 84, Walde LEW2 and W. -Hofmann s. porrum. -- If the word is Pre-Greek, this may explain the - σ- (not in Furnée).Page in Frisk: 2,589Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > πράσον

48 Εὔξεινος πόντος
Grammatical information: adj.Meaning: `the Black Sea' (Hdt., Pi.).Origin: LW [a loanword which is (probably) not of Pre-Greek origin]X [probably] Iran.Etymology: Prob. euphemistic for ἄξε(ι)νος `inhospitable' (of the Black Sea e. g. Pi. P. 4, 263, E. IT 348), from Iranian (Scythian?) through folk-etymology, cf. Av. axšaēna- `dark-coloured'. Vasmer Osteur. Ortsnamen (Acta Univ. Dorp. B: I 3 [1921]) 3ff., Jacobsohn KZ 54, 254ff. S. also Allen Class. Quart. 41, 86ff.; 42, 60 against Moorhouse ib. 34, 123ff.; 42, 59f., who rejects Iranian origin. Recently R. Schmitt, Sel. Onom. Writings (2000) 158-163, who assumes that these names did not refer to a reality, but that the colour-names were used to indicate the cardinal points, for which he gives reff. in n. 7 (but none about Persia); the use of the colour names would have to be the same as in the Slavic world; his reference to the interest of the Persian kings in maritime connections proves nothing. Also the fact that several southern seas were called `red' might better be connected with the fact that Homer knows two Ethiopia's; and καλεομένη just means `(was) called', not `so-called' and is not "a clear hint on the improper or figurative use of the \<colour\>word."Page in Frisk: 1,590Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > Εὔξεινος πόντος
