По правде говоря, для Рея Бунтарь без причины так и останется единственным коммерческим успехом. Этот фильм позволит ему продолжить карьеру в Голливуде, хотя карьера эта преждевременно оборвется 10 годами позже. Сценарный материал могла захлестнуть волна штампов, пришедших из фильмов о трудных подростках, от которых Голливуд в то время был без ума. Но поэтичность и лиричность авторского стиля выходят за рамки этого материала. Лиризм Николаса Рея располагает персонажей в декорациях (планетарий, отвесный обрыв над океаном, заброшенная роскошная вилла в стиле Кокто), в большинстве своем вызывающих мысли о конце света, экзистенциальное головокружение у героев фильма – подростков, которые ищут себя и отчаянно нуждаются хоть в каких-нибудь ценностях. Конфликтные отношения с родителями усиливают их неуверенность, а неуверенность приводит к мрачному упоению жизнью. Мастерство Рея в этой картине видно по тому, как он использует социологический контекст для поэтических размышлений на тему одиночества, насилия и неизлечимой тоски некоторых людей. Ему как художнику тоже нужны оправдания, чтобы установить контакт с массовым зрителем, и это придает его фильму определенную двусмысленность, аромат декаданса – еще один источник обаяния.
       В самом деле, на строго социологическом уровне Бунтарь без причины лишен той силы реализма, что отличает, например, Стучись в любую дверь, Knock on Any Door, и социальное положение банды, сплотившейся вокруг Базза, остается довольно туманным. Если фильму удается преодолеть собственную склонность к декадентству, то происходит это благодаря его драматургической строгости, преувеличенной театральности. Все действие фильма сжато в 24 часа (фильм начинается и заканчивается среди ночи) и разворачивается в нескольких местах, которые и банальны, и необыкновенны, и прекрасно смотрятся в широкоэкранном формате. В этих декорациях происходят подчас очень длинные сцены, таящие в себе яркие и незабываемые моменты. Фильм внес существенный вклад в подкрепление мифа о Джеймсе Дине, сложившегося после К востоку от рая, East of Eden. Но очевидно, что любимый персонаж Рея ― подросток Платон (Сэл Минио), гораздо более хрупкий, чем герой Джеймса Дина. Отчаянная нехватка дружбы и отцовской любви приведет его прямиком к трагедии. Впрочем, именно этот персонаж занимал главное место в сценарии на ранней стадии ― до того, как Джеймса Дина утвердили на роль Джима Старка.
       N.В. Рассказ, легший в основу сценария, был написан Николасом Реем и озаглавлен «Гонка вслепую» (The Blind Run). Его переработал Леон Юрис, автор «Исхода», затем ― Ирвинг Шулмен (который, в частности, добавил гонку у обрыва) и, наконец, Стюарт Стерн написал окончательную версию сценария.
       БИБЛИОГРАФИЯ: сценарий и диалоги опубликованы в сборнике «Лучшие американские сценарии» (Best American Screenplays, под ред. Сэма Томаса, Crown Publishers, New York, 1986). В сценарий включен пролог, который так и не был снят (из соображений цензуры): банда Базза нападает на прохожего с сумками в руках (действие происходит в канун Рождества, что тоже изменится в окончательной версии фильма) и роняет на землю маленькую механическую обезьянку, с которой потом играет герой Джеймса Дина в знаменитых планах на начальных титрах. Николас Рей написал 2 статьи о своем фильме: «Портрет актера в молодом человеке: Джеймс Дин» («Portrait de l'acteur en jeune homme: James Dean», в журнале «Cahiers du cinéma», № 66, 1956; статья сначала появилась на английском языке в газете «Daily Variety» от 31 октября 1956 г. как отрывок из будущей книги «Бунтарь ― Подлинная история фильма» [Rebel – The Life Story of a Film] о съемках фильма, которая так и не была издана) и «От сюжета к сценарию» («Story into Script» в журнале «Sight and Sound», Лондон, весна 1956 г., о процессе зарождения сценария).
