Но в случае Вора выразительность все-таки берет верх над неоправданностью. Отсутствие диалогов прежде всего в максимально конкретной форме отражает диктат тайны, по определению царящий в шпионском мире. Кроме того, оно подчеркивает некоторые психологические и нравственные характеристики персонажей, действующих в удушливом мире нуара: одиночество, тревога, клаустрофобия, пассивность (кульминацией их выражения становятся съемки с верхней точки). Реалистичность натуры в Вашингтоне и Нью-Йорке придает дополнительную абсурдность передвижениям героя, сначала связанного по рукам и ногам служебным распорядком, затем бегущего от агентов ФБР. Прекрасно играет Рей Милленд (чем-то напоминая своего героя из Потерянных выходных, The Lost Weekend). Актер воплощает одновременно и самого обычного человека, из-за своей слабохарактерности угодившего в кафкианский мир шпионажа, и невротика, которому именно слабость и доброта не дают без потерь выдержать оказываемое на него давление. Мы даже видим, как, невольно совершив убийство, он переживает совершенно удивительный нервный срыв и разражается слезами. Это доказывает разносторонность актера, способного успешно играть добрых и измученных людей (такого человека он играет в этом фильме) и придавать незабываемую объемность циничным, коварным персонажам, в любых обстоятельствах четко отдающим себе отчет в своих действиях (см. При убийстве набирайте «У», Dial М for Murder; или Он же Ник Бил, Alias Nick Beal, Джон Фэрроу, 1949, где Милленд играет ни много ни мало самого Дьявола). К счастью, достоинства актерской игры компенсируют недостатки экспериментального хода с молчанием: надуманность, искусственность и излишнюю систематичность. Легко можно догадаться, что для приглашенного композитора фильм представлял собой необыкновенную возможность проявить свой талант и развернуться как следует в 90-мин пространстве. Тем обиднее, что такой выдающийся мастер, как Хершел Бёрк Гилберт, не смог лучше воспользоваться этой возможностью. Музыкальное сопровождение слишком назойливо и кажется недостойным восхитительного композитора Кармен Джоунз, Carmen Jones, Нагого рассвета, The Naked Dawn и Вне обоснованных сомнений, Beyond a Reasonable Doubt. -
