  • 9 λεία

    Grammatical information: f.
Meaning: `spoils, esp. of plundered cattle, of war, of hunting', also `cattle, herd' (cf. Edgerton AmJPh 46, 177f.).
Other forms: (Att.), Ion. ληΐη, Dor. (Pi. O. 10, 44) λᾳα f.; besides ληΐς (Dor. λαΐς), - ίδος f. (Il.)
    Compounds: Compp., e. g. λε-ηλατέω `drive away loot, esp. cattle' (Hdt., S., E., X.; after βο-, ἱππ-ηλατέω etc. from βο-, ἱππ-ηλά-της) with λεηλασ-ία, - ίη (X., A. R.), - άτησις (Aen. Tact.); ἀγε-λείη f. surn. of Athena `who drives on loot, provides' (Il.).
Derivatives: ληϊάς f. `the seized, captured' (Υ 193, A. R.); ληϊ̃τις f. ' ἀγελείη' (K 460; after the nom. in - ῖτις), 'ληϊάς' (A. R., Lyc.); ληΐδιος `belonging to the loot, captured' (AP, APl.). Denominat. verb ληΐζομαι, λεΐζομαι `make spoils, plunder' (Il.) with several nouns: 1. ληϊστός, λεϊστός `to be caried off as booty' (I 406, 408; Ammann Μνήμης χάριν 1, 14); 2. ληϊστύς f. `making booty, plundering `(Hdt. 5, 6; Porzig Satzinhalte 182); 3. *ληισμός in λῃ(ι)σμαδία αἰχμάλωτος, λεληισμένη H. - 4. ληϊστήρ, λῃστήρ m. `plunderer, pirate', f. λῄστειρα (Ael.), λῃστρίς (D., Herod.), with λῃστρικός `plundering' (IA.; cf. λῃστ-ικός below), λῃστή-ριον, Dor. λᾳσ- `gang of robbers,...nest, robbery' (Att., Cret.), λᾳστήριοι pl. `pirate' (hell. poetry); 5. ληΐστωρ, λῄσ- `id.' (ο 427); 6. ληϊστής, λῃσ-, λᾳσ- `id.' (IA.) with λῃστικός (often interchanged with λῃστρικός), λῃστεύω `rob, plunder' with λῃστεία `robbery' (Att.). Attempt to distinguish ληΐστωρ from ληϊστήρ, λῃστεία from ληϊστύς semantically by Benveniste Noms d'agent 30, 37, 69.
    Origin: IE [Indo-European] [655] * leh₂u- `plunder'
Etymology: The abstract λεία, ληΐη from *λᾱϜ-ία and the ιδ-derivation ληΐς from *λᾱϜ-ίδ- which stands beside it (not with Bechtel Lex. 215 after Fraenkel old ī-stem because of ληϊ̃τις, s. v.) can go back either on a noun *λᾱϜ(-ο)- v. t. or directly on a verb, which with zero-grade is supposed in ἀπο-λαύω; s. v., and Pok. 655. S. further λᾱρός and λήϊον.

  • 10 οἶτος

    Grammatical information: m.
Meaning: `fate of men, (unfortunate) destiny' (Il., trag. in lyr.).
Compounds: As 2. member in μεγάλ-οιτος `burdened with a heavy fate, unhappy' (Theoc.) and in PN, e.g. Έχ-οίτης (Athens; Bechtel Namenst. 25, cf. also Hist. PN 345); as 1. member in Οἰτό-λινος m. "Fate-linos" (Sapph. 140b, from Pamphos).
    Origin: IE [Indo-European] [295] * h₁oi-to- `course'
Etymology: Not certainly explained. Formally very close and semantically possible, but of course uncertain is connection of οἶ-τος (on the formation Schwyzer 501) with ἰ-έναι `go' (Brugmann IF 37, 241 a.o.); then prop. `course (of the world)'. An identical formation is supposed in he Celtogerm. word for `oath', OIr óeth, Germ., e.g. Goth. aiÞs, OHG eid (e.g. Meringer IF 18, 295), if orig. `(Eid)gang' (walk to confirm an oath); cf. Swed. ed-gång. Av. aēta- m. `punishment, guilt', by Bartholomae IF 12, 139 identified with οἶτος (prop. `part, share'), can, as not to be separated from αἰσα, αἰτία etc. (s. vv. a. αἴνυμαι), because of the deviating vowel hardly at the same time belong to it (ablaut ai: oi \< h₂ei\/ h₂oi is possible). -- Details w. rich lit. in WP. 1, 102f. (Pok. 295), W.-Hofmann s. 1 (1, 408) and ūtor (2, 848); also still Krause Glotta 25, 143f., also w. lit.

  • 11 πεῖρα

    Grammatical information: f.
Meaning: `test, research, experience' (Alcm., Thgn., Pi., IA.).
    Compounds: As 2. member a.o. in ἔμ-πειρος (s.v.); with ā-stem (cf. Schwyzer 451) in ἱππο-πείρης m. `horse specialist' (Anacr. 75, 6), μονο-πεῖραι ( λύκοι) `hunting alone' (Arist., Men.), the last referring to πειράομαι (Fraenkel Nom. ag. 2, 101 f.); ἀ-πείρων `unexperienced' (S.) for usu. ἄ-πειρος after ἀπείρων from πεῖραρ (s. v.) ? Backformations like ἀνά-, ἀπό-, διά-πειρα (Pi., IA.) from ἀνα-πειράομαι etc. On ταλαπείριος s. v.
Derivatives: Three denominatives: 1. πειράομαι, more rare - άω, often w. prefix like ἀνα-, δια-, ἀπο-, ἐκ-, `to tempt, to put to the test, to try' (Il.). From it πειρᾱ-τής m. `pirate' (hell.) with - τικός `belonging to pirates' (Str., Ph.), - τεύω `to act like a pirate' (LXX); πειρατήριον, Ion. - ητ- n. `(juridical) trial' (Hp., E.). `gang of pirates, pirates' nest' (LXX, Str.), πειρητήριος `exploring, trying' (Hp.); πείρασις f. `temptation, assault' (Th., D. C.; can also belong to 2.). -- 2. πειράζω, Aor. - άσαι, - ασθῆναι (Od., Arist., hell.), Cret. fut. πειράξω, κατα-πειράσω Lys., also w. κατα-, ἐκ-, ἀπο- a.o., `to tempt, to put to the test, to assault'. From there πειρ-ασμός m. `temptation' (LXX, NT), - αστής m. `tempter' (Ammon. Gramm.), - αστικός `belonging to, fit for tempting, trying' (Arist.), ἀ-πείρασ-τος `unexperienced, untempted' (hell.); to πείρασις s. on πειράομαι. -- 3. πειρη-τίζω (only presentst.) `to tempt, to explore, to assault' (Il.; on the fomation Schwyzer 706).
    Origin: IE [Indo-European] [818] * per- `try'
Etymology: Formed like στεῖρα, σπεῖρα, μοῖρα etc., so \< *πέρ-ι̯α (Aeol. πέρρα after Choerob. An. Ox. 2, 252), ι̯α-deriv. from a basis of unknown function (Schwyzer 474, Chantraine Form. 98 f.). Backformation from πειράομαι (Sommer Nominalkomp. 118 as alternative) is certainly possible, but the formation of the verb then remains unclear. -- Certain cognates presents only Latin in perī-tus `experience', perī-culum `attempt, danger, proces', ex-perior, - īrī `try, put to the test', of which the ī-element seems to be connected with the Greek suffix. Arm. p` orj `attempt', if with Meillet BSL 36, 110 to be connected, must represent an aspirated (expressive) anlaut. Further uncertain or improbable connections with Celt. and Germ. in WP. 2, 28f., Pok. 818, W.-Hofmann s. perī-culum. Connection with the great group of πείρω, περάω (s. vv.) is very probable.
