87 Bags (Tubular Cloths)
Pockets, pillow cases (see Pillow Cloth). Are all types of double cloths, usually woven with tappets, similar to Smalley's, or on a dobby loom. A special loom is now made for these fabrics. If one bag only is woven in the width, 4 healds are required; if several in the width, then 2 extra or 4 extra shafts would be needed to weave the plain between the bags. The warp requires special controlling, as greater tension is necessary when the bottom of the bag is being woven. A standard bag cloth is woven 96 X 96, 14's/14's, all American yams. This "gives 48 ends and picks in each fold. The bottom of the bag being woven by a special motion. Widths are 14-in. to about 24-in. A pillow case cloth is made 108-ends, 4 in a dent, 120 picks, 24's warp, 16's weft. Ends and picks are total of both folds.Dictionary of the English textile terms > Bags (Tubular Cloths)

A light plain cloth fine reed, pick and yarns, such as 100 X 80, 60's/80's. Both American and Egyptian yarns are used. It is difficult to say where a muslin ends and a cambric begins because of their great similarity. Cambric originally meant a fine linen cloth. Other styles of cotton cambrics are: - 53 in 61 yards, 100 X 100, 52's/62's all Egyptian 40 in 120 yards 92 X 88, 62's/62's all Egyptian 41 in 90 yards, 100 X 88 52's/52's all Egyptian. Records show that cambric made of linen was printed at London in 1595 and chiefly used for the great ruffs then in fashion with both sexes Bands cuffs also shirts were made of it. ———————— A very fine farbic without any weaving faults used for neckties and scarves when printed or dyed. Super quality yarns are used and fine reed and pick. ———————— A true cambric being an all linen fabric plain weave. Used for under clothing many dress purposes and hand kerchiefs. Usually green yams are used and the cloth is afterwards boiled and bleached. For handkerchiefs coloured yarns are frequently used for borders. ———————— A soft finished fabric used for dress linings in various colours and weights. -

Usually 34-in. to 36-in. wide, 36 yards long, and about 60 ends and 60 picks per inch, 30's warp and 30's weft, cotton yarns. Made for the home trade, and for export to India, China, etc. The original longcloth was a very fine one, and made from 60's/40's to 80's/60's super yarns and 96 ends and 90 picks per inch. The cloth for export is made about 34-in. 72 ends and 72 picks per inch, 36's T., 38's W., all American cotton. A style of plain cloth known as longcloth in the U.S.A. and used for children's and ladies' dress wear is made 39-in. to finish 36-in. from 80 ends and 76 picks per inch, 30's T., 40's W., to 100 ends and 100 picks per inch, and 50's warp, 70's weft, all cotton. -
90 Osnaburg
This name was derived from the province of Osnaburg, Hanover, where the cloth was originally made from coarse flax yarns in a plain weave. It is now made from very coarse cotton yarns, such as 14's to 24's warp, and 6's to 8's weft, or coarser. Woven 28 to 40 ends and 32 to 36 picks per inch. Shipped to West Africa, the Canary Islands, and other ports. When stripes or checks are introduced the cloth sells well in the Southern States of America. The cloth is woven with very irregular yarns. The American makers use the following terms for these fabrics: - " 30-in. 7-oz. high count " which is 40 ends and 30 picks per inch, 6's warp, 6's weft; " 30-in. 7-oz. low count " which is 32 ends and 28 picks per inch, 6's warp, and 41/2's weft. Other standard qualities are: 40-in., 32 ends and 28 picks per inch, 11's warp, 11's weft, 31/2 yards per lb.; 36-in., 32 ends and 28 picks per inch, 11's warp, 11's weft, 3-90 yards per lb., all-cotton yarns. -

94 Howe, Elias
[br]b. 9 July 1819 Spencer, Massachusetts, USAd. 3 October 1867 Bridgeport, Connecticut, USA[br]American inventor of one of the earliest successful sewing machines.[br]Son of Elias Howe, a farmer, he acquired his mechanical knowledge in his father's mill. He left school at 12 years of age and was apprenticed for two years in a machine shop in Lowell, Massachusetts, and later to an instrument maker, Ari Davis in Boston, Massachusetts, where his master's services were much in demand by Harvard University. Fired by a desire to invent a sewing machine, he utilized the experience gained in Lowell to devise a shuttle carrying a lower thread and a needle carrying an upper thread to make lock-stitch in straight lines. His attempts were so rewarding that he left his job and was sustained first by his father and then by a partner. By 1845 he had built a machine that worked at 250 stitches per minute, and the following year he patented an improved machine. The invention of the sewing machine had an enormous impact on the textile industry, stimulating demand for cloth because making up garments became so much quicker. The sewing machine was one of the first mass-produced consumer durables and was essentially an American invention. William Thomas, a London manufacturer of shoes, umbrellas and corsets, secured the British rights and persuaded Howe to come to England to apply it to the making of shoes. This Howe did, but he quarrelled with Thomas after less than one year. He returned to America to face with his partner, G.W.Bliss, a bigger fight over his patent (see I.M. Singer), which was being widely infringed. Not until 1854 was the case settled in his favour. This litigation threatened the very existence of the new industry, but the Great Sewing Machine Combination, the first important patent-pooling arrangement in American history, changed all this. For a fee of $5 on every domestically-sold machine and $1 on every exported one, Howe contributed to the pool his patent of 1846 for a grooved eye-pointed needle used in conjunction with a lock-stitch-forming shuttle. Howe's patent was renewed in 1861; he organized and equipped a regiment during the Civil War with the royalties. When the war ended he founded the Howe Machine Company of Bridgeport, Connecticut.[br]Further ReadingObituary, 1867, Engineer 24.Obituary, 1867, Practical Magazine 5.F.G.Harrison, 1892–3, Biographical Sketches of Pre-eminent Americans (provides a good account of Howe's life and achievements).N.Salmon, 1863, History of the Sewing Machine from the Year 1750, with a biography of Elias Howe, London (tells the history of sewing machines).F.B.Jewell, 1975, Veteran Sewing Machines, A Collector's Guide, Newton Abbot (a more modern account of the history of sewing machines).C.Singer (ed.), 1958, A History of Technology, Vol. V, Oxford: Clarendon Press (covers the mechanical developments).D.A.Hounshell, 1984, From the American System to Mass Production 1800–1932.
