Given to an all-cotton cloth used for many dress purposes, bleached, dyed and printed 35-in./90 yards 124 X 64 per inch, 36's/40's yarns, 22-lb. plain weave. Better qualities have two-fold warp or two-fold warp and weft, generally 2/80's Egyptian, which greatly resemble Lancashire poplins. ———————— A term that in many districts was used to indicate garments worn by the clergy. It is a stout wool cloth. Made from fine merino yarns, and heavily milled and - finished with a dress face. It has a velvety feel and a silky gloss. A 90-in. in the loom gives 56-in. finished. One quality is made 32 X 40 per inch, from 26 skeins warp and weft. Dyed black or indigo. Another type is made from West of England woollen yams in very wide widths, and shrunk during finish about 33 per cent. Woven 2 X 1 twill. Quality varies according to price. It is a superfine, smooth-faced and dense fabric, and considered the perfection in woollen materials. -

A plain weave cloth made in U.S.A. and printed in stripes and checks to imitate ginghams. Finished width 24/5-in., 62 ends and 62 picks per inch. 28's T. 38's W., 12/13 lb. for 100 yards. The cloth has a large sale in the South American market. -

Woollen fabric made to imitate cloth which is hand-woven from hand-spun yarn. A medium grade of wool is used, fairly long staple, and free from all foreign matter. Woven 2 & 2 twill, 32 ends and 40 picks per inch; weighing about 11-oz. per yard for 68-in. loom state. Cloths up to 15-oz. or 16-oz. are also made. Very fine plain cloths. The original lawn was a fine linen cloth used for dress purposes, but is now known as " linen lawn " (see Boiled Linen Lawn). Indian Lawn is from 30-in. to 36-in. wide, 24 yards long, 72 ends and 64 picks per inch, calendered and made up book fold, or if 40-in. wide in long fold; the yarns are about 50/60's to 60/80's, both American and Egyptian. Victoria Lawn is a stiff-finished lawn, 24/26-in. wide, 92 ends and 92 picks per inch, and similar yarns to Indian lawns. Persian Lawns, 32-in., 24 yard, 100 ends and 100 picks per inch, 60's T., 80's W., and finer, Egyptian yarns, soft finish. Bishops' Lawn - A bleached and finished cloth with a blue tint, similar quality to Victoria lawn. Boiled Linen Lawns - Fine set dress fabric, made from all flax yarns such as 72 ends and 90 picks per inch, 60's/80's lea. Up to 100's lea warp and 140's lea weft is used. In many widths 32-in. upwards. Sheer Lawns - Linen cloths made from green or natural coloured yarns and piece-bleached. These also vary considerably in qualities and up to 100's lea warp and even 160's lea weft is used. Widths 371/2-in. to about 45-in. Lawn was first known in England in Elizabeth's reign, when it was a linen fabric and used for ruffs, shirts, etc. -

LINGETTE, or SHADOW CLOTH (LINGUET)This is a warp satin produced by using stripes of regular and reverse twist and is very effective when white or dyed. The term is an American one and the cloth is known in Lancashire as " shadow striped warp satin." For the Indian markets the cloth is made in blue and white and called Necanee. -

A good quality lining cloth woven with the 3 & 1 twill weave, and usually 52-in. to 56-in. in width, generally dyed black and schreiner finished. Many qualities are made, one is 76 ends and 150 picks per inch, 32's warp, 44's weft, all American cotton.
