1 αἶσχος
Grammatical information: n.Meaning: `shame, ugliness, pl. `disgraceful deeds' (Il.).Derivatives: With ro- resp. u-stem αἰσχρός `dishonouring, ugly' and αἰσχύνω `dishonour' Med. `be ashamed' (Il.), Αἰσχύλος.Origin: XX [etym. unknown]Etymology: Compared with Goth. aiwiski n. ` αἰσχύνη', which requires rather difficult forms: αἶσχος \< *aiguzghos \< * aigʷʰs-kos, aiwiski \< * aigʷʰes-ki-om); the addition of - ko-, - ki- after an s-stem is strange (on the Gothic word Mezger KZ 79, 1960, 40). The words will have nothing to do with each other. De Lamberterie, Adj. en υς 835-840, compares αἴδομαι * aid-sk-; semantically not easy.Page in Frisk: 1,46-47Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > αἶσχος

3 αἰγανέη
Grammatical information: f.Meaning: `hunting spear, javelin' (Il.).Origin: XX [etym. unknown]Etymology: For the suffix cf. the names of trees and animal skins in - έη, - έα, μηλέη, πτελέη, κυνέη usw. (Chantr. Form. 91f.). If named after the material, one compares `oak' PGm. * aik-, PIE * aig-, supposed also in αἰγίλωψ (q.v.) and Lat. aesculus; Schrader KZ 30, 461f. Trümpy Krieger. Fachausdrücke 52, 57 explains that it was thrown by a strap; further Vretska Gymnasium 61, 1954, 419. On that basis, Laser Gymnasium 60 (1953) 115-121 connects it with PIE * h₂eig- `move (oneself)', Skt. éjati, for which αἶγες κύματα (s. αἴξ) is compared. Improbable; if ej- belongs to iṅg- ( EWAia I\/264), the root had a labio-velar, which makes the connection impossible. 4 αἰγίλωψ
αἰγίλωψ, - ωποςGrammatical information: m.Meaning: `kind of oak' (Thphr.), also `haver-grass' (Thphr.); also `ulcer in the eye, lacrymal fistula' for which see ἀγχίλωψ. For the meaning s. Strömberg Pflanzennamen 87.Origin: XX [etym. unknown]Etymology: As name of an oak derived from * aig- Pok. 13 (seen in αἰγανέη and αἴγειρος?). Kretschmer Glotta 3, 335 connected - λωψ with λώπη `cork' (cf. λώψ χλαμύς H.) adducing Pliny ( Hist. nat. 16, 6, 13): aegilops fert pannos arentes... non in cortice modo, verum et e ramis dependentes. The whole rather doubtful. - Strömberg Pflanzennamen 137 derives αἰγίλωψ in the second meaning from αἴγιλος `haver-grass' (Theoc.), which is certainly correct.Page in Frisk: 1,31-32Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > αἰγίλωψ
