Jh. als eine Sportart der Schäfer und wurde während des 17. Jhs. bei den Aristokraten beliebt. Die ersten Test Matches zwischen England und Australien wurden bereits 1877 ausgetragen. Beim Cricket gibt es zwei Teams mit je elf Spielern, die abwechselnd als batsmen - Schlagmänner und fielders - Fänger spielen, mit zwei bowlers - Werfer - einen an jedem Ende des Cricketfeldes. Batsmen machen Punkte, indem sie nach dem Schlagen runs - Punkte zwischen den beiden wickets - Pfostentore erzielen. Aus dem Spiel ( out) sind sie aber, wenn sie entweder gefangen werden ( caught), wenn ein fielder den Ball fängt, oder wenn sie ausgeschlagen werden ( bowled): der bowler schlägt dann das wicket, oder aber wenn sie lbw sind, d.h. der bowler trifft das Bein des batsman ( leg before the wicket). -
