2 μυκός
Grammatical information: adj.Meaning: ἄφωνος H. (in alphab. wrong position).Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]X [probably], XX [unknown]Etymology: One compares Skt. mū́ka- `dumb'. -- With dental μυττός (\< *-κι̯-?), μύτης, μύδος (H.), μύνδος (S. Fr. 1072, Lyc. 1375, Call. Fr.260; unterital. `with small ears', Rohlfs ByzZ 37, 58f.), μυναρός (H.) `id.'. On itself sands μύρκος ὁ καθόλου μη δυνάμενος λαλεῖν. Συρακούσιοι. ἐνεός, ἄφωνος H.; μυρικᾶς ἄφωνος, ἐν ἑαυτῳ̃ ἔχων ο μέλλει πράττειν H. (cf. v. Blumenthal Hesychst. 42). -- From sound imitating mū, s. μύω (?); on the dental-formations cf. Lat. mūtus, s. further W.-Hofmann on mūtus; with μύνδος (s.v.) Arm. munǰ `dumb' (\< *mun(d)i̯os?); s. auch 1. mundus. With μύρκος agrees formally Lat. murcus `mutilated', esp. of him, who, so as not to become soldier, cuts off his thumbs; it could be a loan from Lat. in Sicil. (rather than the other way round), s. W.-Hofmann s.v. - μύνδος may have prenasal. beside μύδος (and must therefore be retained; against Latte, whose note is not clear to me). I think that μυναρός is a misreading for *μυνδρος. The other forms cannot be easyly fitted in. Continues μυρικ-ᾶς a form *mury-k-? - The group is very unclear. 7 μύδος
Grammatical information: adj.Meaning: ἄφωνος H. (Lattes comment is not clear to me.)Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]X [probably]Etymology: Cf. μυκός. I see no connection between the two. The first connection seems with μυνδός, which points to a Pre-Greek word (with prenasalisation). Connection with Arm. mownǰ `dumb' seems obvious, but the conclusion is not clear (Clackson, Relationship 45: *mundi̯o- `somewhat dubious'; it could well be a substratum word). Pok. 751 does not help.Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > μύδος

10 μωρός 1
μωρός 1.Grammatical information: adj.Meaning: `stupid, obtuse, foolish' (IA.).Other forms: Att. μῶρος (prob. from the voc.; Schwyzer 380 and 383)Compounds: Compp., most late, e.g. μωρο-λόγος `who speaks stupidities' with - λογία, - λογέω, - λόγημα (Arist.), ὑπό-μωρος `rather stupid' (Luc.).Derivatives: μωρία, Ion. - ίη f. `stupidity' (IA.), μωρίαι ἵπποι καὶ βοῦς ὑπὸ Άρκάδων H. (sg. μωρίας m. like ἐρυθ-ρίας a.o.; meaning as NGr. ἄλογο = ἵππος), Μωρίων (Arc. Gramm.; to be rejected Heubeck Beitr. z. Namenforsch. 1, 281: to Μυρίνη etc.). Denominat.: 1. μωραίνω `be stupid, foolish' (A., E., X., Arist.), `play the fool, make foolish', pass. `become insipid' (LXX, NT) with μώραν-σις = μωρία (Sch.). -- 2. μωρόομαι `become insipid (Hp.). -- 3. μωρεύω = μωραίνω (LXX). -- 4. μωρίζω `be stupid' (Gal.).Origin: XX [etym. unknown]Etymology: Not well explained. Since Pictet (s. Curtius 338) usually connected with Skt. mūrá- `foolish' (?; rather `erschütterlich = invalid' after Thumb -Hauschild Hb. des Sanskrit I: 1, 271 n.) connected with ablaut ō(u): ū. Brugmann Festschr. Thomsen 6 connects mūrá- with Skt. mū́ka-'dumb' (s. μυκός). With words of this meaning we must reckon with deviations and crosses, which makes the comparison more difficult. -- Lat. LW [loanword] mōrus `mad, silly', s. W. -Hofmann s.v. Ngr. μωρό `nursling' (Andriotis Glotta 25, 17).Page in Frisk: 2,Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > μωρός 1
