B) c. dat., mitten unter; (1) gew, von lebenden Wesen, von dem sich unter einer größern Menge Befinden; μετ' Ἀχαιοῖς πολεμίζειν, mitten unter ihnen kämpfen, nicht gegen sie; ὃς ϑεὸς ἔσκε μετ' ἀνδράσιν, unter den Männern war er ein Gott. Bes. auch unter od. vor mehreren sprechen. Auch μετὰ δὲ τριτάτοισιν ἄνασσεν, wo der Herrscher nicht gegenüber gestellt wird, sondern als einer derjenigen, unter denen er der Erste ist. Auch die bloße Annäherung, Bewegung nach einem Ziele hin, σφαῖραν ἔπειτ' ἔῤῥιψε μετ' ἀμφίπολον, sie warf den Ball nach einer Dienerin; sowohl im freundlichen Sinne, βῆναι μετὰ Νέστορα, zum Nestor hingehen, um ihn zu besuchen, als auch feindlich, βῆναι μετά τινα, auf einen losgehen, ihn angreifen od. verfolgen; μετὰ χῆνας, auf die Gänse los und mitten hinein, unter sie fahren. (2) nach etwas gehen, um es zu holen oder zu erlangen, die Absicht der Bewegung ausdrückend; πλεῖν μετὰ χαλκόν, nach Erz fahren, um es zu holen; μετὰ πατρὸς ἀκουήν, nach oder auf Kunde vom Vater ausgehen, um etwas vom Vater zu hören; γήμας δ' ἐκ ϑαλάμοιο μετὰ κλέος ἵκετ' Ἀχαιῶν, er zog auf die Kunde von den Achäern aus, folgte dem Rufe; μετ' ἄλλας ἔρχεσϑαι, nach anderen Weibern ausgehen, um sie zu freien; πόλεμον μέτα ϑωρήσσοντο, sie rüsteten sich zum Kampfe. (3) von örtlicher oder räumlicher Aufeinanderfolge: nach, hinterdrein, λαοὶ ἕσπονϑ' ὡςεί τε μετὰ κτίλον ἕσπετο μῆλα, wie Schafe hinter dem Leitbock hergehen; σὺν ἀμφιπόλοισι μεϑ' ἡμιόνους καὶ ἅμαξαν ἔρχεσϑαι, hinter dem Wagen hergehen; μετ' ἴχνια βαῖνε ϑεοῖο, der Spur der Göttin ging er nach; auch beim Aufstellen: hinter einen anderen. Dah. auch (4) von der Aufeinanderfolge, dem Werte, dem Range nach: nächst, zunächst nach; κάλλιστος ἀνὴρ τῶν ἄλλων Δαναῶν μετ' ἀμύμονα Πηλείωνα, der Schönste unter den Danaern nächst dem Achilleus; πρώτῳ τοι μετ' ἐμέ, dem ersten nach mir; μετὰ γὰρ μάκαρας καὶ Διὸς ἰσχὺν ὅδε Καδμείων ἤρυξε πόλιν, nächst den Göttern schützte er. (5) bes. von der Aufeinanderfolge in der Zeit, αὐτίκα γάρ τοι ἔπειτα μεϑ' Ἕκτορα πότμος ἑτοῖμος, sogleich nach Hektor; μετὰ ταῦτα, nach diesem, darauf, hernach; ἡ μετὰ τοῦτ' ἀπόκρισις, die darauf folgende Antwort; μετὰ μικρόν, in Kurzem, bald darauf; mit partic., μετὰ Πάτροκλόν γε ϑανόντα, nachdem Patroklus gestorben war. Oft wird mit großer Kürze ein Wort dabei gesetzt, welches prägnant für einen ganzen Satz steht, τὰς μετὰ τὸν Μηδὸν σπονδάς, nach dem Mederkriege, oder nachdem der Meder besiegt worden; μετὰ τὸν ἑξέτη, nachdem er sechs Jahre alt geworden. Hieran reiht sich der Ausdruck μεϑ' ἡμέραν, eigtl. nach Tagesanbruch; ἅμ' ἡμέρᾳ, übh. am Tage, bei Tage; μετὰ τρίτην ἡμέραν, am dritten Tage. (6) Aus μετ' ἴχνια βαίνειν, ἐρευνᾶν, der Fährte nachspüren, entwickelt sich die Bdtg: nach, gemäß; αἶψα μεταστρέψειε νόον μετὰ σὸν καὶ ἐμὸν κῆρ, nach deinem u. meinem Herzen. (7) mitten unter, zwischen in; βουλῇ μετὰ πάντας ὁμήλικας ἔπλευ ἄριστος, der beste unter allen Altersgenossen; μετὰ χεῖρας ἔχειν, unter den Händen haben. Seinem Substantivum wird μετά oft nachgesetzt u. erleidet dann die Anastrophe, μέτα; doch steht apostrophiert τὸν δὲ μετ' ohne Accent. In der Zusammensetzung bedeutet es: (1) eine Gemeinschaft, Teilnahme, Mitteilung, μεταδίδωμι, μετέχω, μεταλαμβάνω, u. μεταδαίνυμαι, μεταμέλπομαι, ein gemeinschaftliches Tun mit anderen. (2) zwischen u. während, dem Raume od. der Zeit nach, μεταδόρπιος, μεταπύργιον; dah. auch in, μεταδἡμιος. (3) nachher, hinterdrein, μέτειμι, μετακλαίω.
