Risch IF 59, 45f.; but ἐξ-έδρα `seat outside the house' (E., hell.). - Bahuvrihi with adv. 1. member ἔφ-εδρος `who sits byside, reserve' (Pi.); thus πάρ-εδρος `assistance' ( παρ-έζομαι), ἔν-εδρος `inhabitant', σύν-εδρος `id.'; ἔξ-εδρος `far from his habitat' (S.); - πολύ-εδρος `with many seats' (Plu.).Derivatives: From ἕδρα: ἑδραῖος `with fixed habitat, fest, quiet' (Ion.-Att.) with ἑδραιότης and ἑδραιόω, ἑδραίωμα, - ωσις; ἑδρικός `belonging to the anus' (Medic.), ἑδρίτης `fugitive' (Suid., EM; πρωτοκαθεδρίτης `president' [Herm.]. Schwyzer 527), ἑδρίας ἀεὶ πνέων (after wind names in - ίας); ἕδρια συνέδρια, ἑδρίς ἑδραῖος.Origin: GR [a formation built with Greek elements]Etymology: After words in - ᾰνον arose ἕδρᾰνον = ἕδρα (Hes.); ἑδρανῶς = στερεῶς (Eust.). 16 λαγαίω
Grammatical information: v.Other forms: aor. λαγάσαι (Crete),Compounds: also with ἀπο-.Derivatives: ἀπολάγαξις `release' (Crete; on the formation Chantraine Form. 281, Bechtel Dial. 2, 746). - Several nouns, that do not directly depend from the verb: 1. λαγαρός `slack, emaciated, thin' (IA.) with λαγαρότης `slackness etc.', λαγαρόομαι `get slack' (AP) with λαγάρωσις (Eust.; of στίχοι λαγαροί). λαγαρίζομαι meaning unclear (com.); 2. λάγανον `thin cake' (hell.) with λαγάνιον (late) and λαγανίζω (?; Hp. Morb. Sacr. 13 ; cf. Kind Herm. 72, 368) ; 1. a. 2. first from a noun *λαγαρ \/ ν-? (vgl. Benveniste Origines 18; to the frequent nom. in - ανον Chantraine Form. 198 f.). A ν-suffix also in the semantically deviant 3. λάγνος (- νης; on the barytone acc. Schwyzer 489) `lascivious, voluptuous' with λαγνεύω `be lascivious, be lecherous', λαγνεία `the act of coition etc.' (IA.). 4. *λαγος (*λάξ) `slack, thin' in λαγόνες pl. f. (m..), rarely - ών sg. `the hollows on the side, the flanks' (IA.), also in λαγώς `hare' (s. v.).Origin: LW [a loanword which is (probably) not of Pre-Greek origin] Eur. substr.XEtymology: A direct agreement to *λαγος, if from *σλαγος (s. on λήγω) gives a Germ. adj. for `slack': Nord. slakr , OS slac, OE slæc etc.; here with anlaut. l- (= IE.) MLG. lak `id.', thus OIr. lacc `id.' (with expressive gg). The formal identity of λαγών and WNo. lake `flap', of λάγανον and OS lakan, OHG lahhan `cloth' rests on parallel innovations of the separate languages. - With λαγαρός we can directly compare Toch. A slākkär `sad'. Beside it with s-suffix Lat. laxus `slack, weak etc.'; also Skt. ślakṣṇá- `slippery, meagre, thin' (from *slakṣ- assim., Hendriksen IF 56, 27 f.)? - Disyllabic λαγά-σαι (: λαγαρός) has an example in the synonymous χαλά-σαι (: χαλαρός); λαγαίω is innovation like κεραίω, ἀγαίομαι (s. κεράννυμι and ἀγα-; diff. Specht Ursprung 325); besides NGr. (Cret.) λαγάζω, s. Schulze Kl. Schr. 354 n. 1. Cf. also on κλαδαρός. - With diff. ablaut here λήγω, λωγάνιον, λωγάς, s. vv. - As * slh₂g- would have given *slāg-, the form has not been explained; is it a Eur. substratum word?Page in Frisk: 2,68Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > λαγαίω

18 λαυκανίη
Grammatical information: f.Meaning: `throat' (Il.).Other forms: Later mostly λευ-, s. belowOrigin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]Etymology: Formation like ἀρτηρ-ία (s. v.) a. o. from an not attested *λαύκ-ανον (- ανος, - άνη); vgl. Scheller Oxytonierung 62. An aspirated by-form appears in λαυχάνη γλῶσσα H. (cf. Specht Ursprung 252). No certain agreement. Against the attractive connection with Lith. pa-laũkis `lobe of horned cattle' (Fick BB 1, 332) Fraenkel Wb. s. liaukà: the right form is pa-liaũkis, to liaukà `(jugular) gland' (from liaũkti `flow, stream'). With folketymological adaptation to liaukà ?, as in Greek (since v. l. in Hom.) secondary λευκ-, perh. after λευκός (on αυ: ευ also Schwyzer 198)? - On Slav. (WRuss., Pol.) l̃kać `swallow' s. λύζω. - The variant with - χ- shows Pre-Greek origin.Page in Frisk: 2,90-91Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > λαυκανίη

(Hippon.) with λεκάριον (hell.), λεκίς f. (Epich.), - ίσκος m. (Hp.) `id.'; - ίσκιον as measure (Hp.).Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]Etymology: With λεκάνη cf. πατάνη, οὑράνη a. other names of utensils in - άνη, - ανον in Chantraine Form. 197ff., Schwyzer 489f.; beside it λέκος as ἄγγος; λέκος: λεκάνη like στέφος: στεφάνη, ἕρκος: ἑρκάνη (late; s. on ἕρκος). - Connections outside Greek are uncertain; usually λέκος, λεκάνη together with Lat. lanx `dish' are as *lowering, bending inward' derived from a great group of words from `bend, bow' (IE (* el-ek-), with also λοξός and λέχριος (s. vv.); s. WP. 1, 157f., Pok. 308, W.-Hofmann s. lanx; this is certainly wong, as the word is Pre-Greek; thus Ernout-Meillet s. lanx. - From λεκάνη Arab. leken, Osm. lejen \> NGr. τὸ λεγένι `bowl, dish', ORuss. legin `kind of vase'; Maidhof Glotta 10,13, Vasmer Wb. s. v. 20 πτίσσω
Grammatical information: v.Meaning: `to shell, grind grains by stamping' (IA.).Derivatives: πτισ-άνη f. (- ανον n. Nic.) `peeled barley, barley-gruel' (Hp., com., pap. a.o.); - μός m. `winnowing' (corn.), - μα n. `peeled barley' (Str.; περιπ[τ]ίσματα pl. sch.; Jacobsohn KZ 42, 276), - ις f. `skin' (Gal. a.o.), - τικός `fit for skinning' (com.).Etymology: Old expression of agriculture, retained in several languages, though exact agreements of the Greek forms are not found. Note however ἄ-πτισ-τος `unstamped (Hp.): Skt. piṣ-ṭá-, Lat. pis-tus `smashed', with πτιστικός `fit for skinning' (com.). Also all other both nominal and verbal forms are based on πτισ- (s. above) except the present πτίσσω, which was innovated after πλάσσω, πάσσω a.o. (cf. Schwyzer 692 w. lit. and ref. of other interpretations). The other languages deviate formally: Skt. and Lat. with the nasalpresents pi-ná-ṣṭi (perf. pi-péṣ-a, pi-piṣ-e; cf. ἔ-πτισ-μαι), pī-n-sō (with innovated pīns(u)ī ; beside it pis-tor etc.) `smash'; Balt. and Slav. with the secondary formations Lith. pais-aũ, -ýti `beat off the beards' (beside the primary pis-ù, -ti `coire cum femina'), Slav., e.g. Russ. pich-áju, -átь `thrust, stamp' (beside the primary pšeno `millet' from * pьšenъ ptc. `stamped').
