    Note: la tortue âyôtl peut symboliser la guerre, yâôtl et le glyphe qui représente une tortue peut se lire parfois /yao/.
    2.\AYOTL carapace de tortue, instrument de musique constitué d'une calebasse évidée que l'on gratte avec une baguette ou avec les bois d'un cerf, idiophone.
    Esp., guiro hecho de concha de tortuga y cuerno de venado
    " âyôtl quitzotzonah ", ils battent des carapaces de tortue - they beat turtle shells. Sah2,75.
    En la gran mayoría de sus apariciones, este elemento sirvió para transcribir el valor /yao/. Es prácticamente el único caso en el que se explotó el recurso de la metátesis: la inversión de los dos primeros segmentos de ayotl por yaotl, por lo que el empleo de este elemento está más bien condicionado por creencias religiosas que vinculan a la tortuga con la guerra.
