  • 9 Jia Sixie (Chia Ssu-Hsieh)

    [br]
    b. sixth century AD China
    d. sixth century AD China
    [br]
    Chinese writer on agricultural practice.
    [br]
Jia Sixie was the author of the Qi Min Yao Shu (Chhi Min Yao Shu), the earliest complete Chinese agricultural treatise to have survived. The survey quotes from over 160 other texts and the author himself relates how he collected from a wide range of sources, including folk songs and the anecdotes of old men. Little is known of Jia Sixie. It is assumed that he was a middle-ranking official and that his agricultural experience derives from his own work in the Shantung region. In addition to husbandry information, the treatise deals with the problems of running an agricultural estate. Details of experiments are also given, indicating that the text may have been aimed more at the estate owner than the peasant farmer. Culinary matters are also commented upon. Discussions of the range of crops available to the Chinese farmer, and of the-rotational practices implemented to make best use of those crops, give a clear indication that a much higher productivity was being achieved than in Europe at that time or for almost another thousand years. Crop diversity and rotations, as well as technologies such as green manuring and implements such as rollers and seed-drills, were combined to achieve these substantial yields.

  • 10 Su Song (Su Sung)

    SUBJECT AREA: Horology
    [br]
    b. 1020 China
    d. 1101 China
    [br]
Chinese astronomer and maker of a mechanical clock.
    [br]
Su Song had a model armillary sphere in his home, which enabled him to study and understand the instrument, but he could not receive an imperial command to make a full-size one before holding an official position. This he attained, and he moved in high official circles in Imperial China; his official appointments included Ambassador, Minister of State and Deputy Imperial Tutor. At the same time he was an outstanding astronomer and calendrical scientist. With the assistance of Han Gonglian, he constructed a water-driven mechanical escapement clock and clocktower in 1088, which he described in detail in his Xin Yi Xian Fa Yao, completed in 1094; this book was noteworthy for illustrations of the armillary sphere and its component parts. The tower included an armillary sphere and celestial globe with clock drive. By applying clockwork to the observational side of the sphere, Su Song anticipated the clockwork drive of the telescope introduced by Robert Hooke six centuries later.
Su Song was also the pharmaceutical naturalist of the Tu Jing Ben Cao of 1061.

  • 11 Zeng Gonglian (Tseng Kung-Liang)

    [br]
    fl. 11th century China
    [br]
    Chinese writer on chemical subjects.
    [br]
In his treatise Wu Jing Zong Yao, compiled with an assistant c. 1040, he wrote down the first formula for gunpowder to be printed and published in any civilization, although the essentials of the mixture had been known in China for just over a century. The text describes several military applications of gunpowder, with an incendiary or, in one case, a toxic chemical rather than an explosive effect; the saltpetre content was too low for the latter, but it was steadily increased over the years.
