41 Welt, English
WELT, ENGLISHThis is made on circular machines when commencing the ribbed piece of a hose or garment. These machines have cylinder and dial or ribber needles which normally work a rib stitch for the ground. At the commencement of the top, only the, cylinder needles are allowed to knit for about six courses, the dial needles holding their stitches the while. When the welt is complete all the cylinder and dial needles work together again and in consequence the tighter dial stitches draw the extra plain loops round the edge and give a greatly improved appearance, and added strength and grip. -

58 Verdol Jacquard
A fine-pitch machine invented by M. Verdol in 1884. It has 16 hooks per row and two rows of 8 holes each on the card correspond with one row of 16 hooks. The rows of holes in the card are staggered to make maximum use of the space. The machines are made in multiples of 112, common sizes being 448, 896, 1344 and 1792 hooks. Instead of pattern cards, an endless band of perforated paper is used to actuate the needles and pattern selecting mechanism. About 15 yards of paper will equal about 1,000 cards, as the Verdol machine presents 80 needles to the square inch as compared with 14 needles for the ordinary British pitch machine. -
59 Welt, Automatic
WELT, AUTOMATICThis is done on the automatic hose machine by holding alternate stitches on points until the welt piece has been completed, the held stitches being thereafter transferred to their original needles to enable the hose to be continued. By this sytem no sewing or stitching is required, and the join is smooth and continuous -with the parent fabric. In the fully-fashioned article all the original stitches are held until the welt length has been knitted when the stitches are moved back once more to the original needles thus giving a two-ply piece of fabric which is. perfectly smooth and continuous with the ground fabric on the inside. On recently constructed full-fashioned hose machines, welting is now done automatically, by a set of points which automatically bear down on the needles to re-transfer the original stitches. -
60 Falcon
SUBJECT AREA: Textiles[br]fl. c.1728 France[br]French improver of the pattern-selection apparatus of Bouchon for weaving.[br]In 1728, Falcon used punched cards, one for each pick, to replace the roll of pierced paper that Bouchon had used for storing the pattern to be woven. The selection of the leashes was the same as the method used by Bouchon. The appropriate card was pressed against a set of horizontal needles at the side of the loom by the drawboy, who then lifted those leashes that had been selected ready for the weaver to send the shuttle across for that pick. The cards could be sewn up into an endless loop so the pattern could be repeated time after time. This apparatus could select a greater width of pattern than Bouchon's because the cards were pressed against the needles by a square block of wood known as the prism or cylinder. This meant that rows of needles could be mounted below each other, allowing for many more to be fitted into the space. Vaucanson tried to make alterations to this apparatus, but the Falcon method remained in use until 1817 at Lyon and formed the basis for the later improvements by Jacquard.[br]Further ReadingM.Daumas (ed.), 1968, Histoire générale des techniques, Vol. III, L'Expansion du machinisme, Paris.Conservatoire National des Arts et Métiers, 1942, Catalogue du musée, section T, industries textiles, teintures et apprêtes, Paris (includes a picture of a model of Falcon's apparatus in the museum).RLH
