Существительное work — более общее слово и обозначает регулярную трудовую деятельность, совершаемую с разными целями (с целью заработка, выполнения своих обязанностей, труда, связанного с профессией или образом жизни):to have much work to do — быть очень занятым, иметь много работы;

Наиболее общее, но одновременно и наиболее официальное название — employment — занятость, работа. В обыденной речи в этом значении употребляется work. Employment употребляется при указании всех, кто имеет оплачиваемую работу. Work, кроме общего со словом employment значения чаще связано с интеллектуальной деятельностью. A piece of work — работа, задание обыкновенно интеллектуального характера. Существительное job указывает на определеный круг обязанностей, исполнение которых оплачивается. Occupation обозначает занятие в определенной области, связанное с профессией. Profession обозначает вид работ, требующих знания, умения. Trade — вид работ, требующих умений в области ремонта, монтажа, создания конкретных предметов, купли и продажи. Position и post — должность по найму, которая часто не требует специальной подготовки.
