    1893-1987
       Debuta en el cine como especialista para Edison en los anos 10 del pasado siglo, antes de convertirse en ayudante de direccion de George Seitz y, despues, en realizador de seriales. En el ano 35 empieza a trabajar para Columbia, dirigiendo westerns, uno detras de otro, a un ritmo frenetico. Durante las decadas de los 40 y 50 se convierte en el gran especialista de Hollywood en seriales, para Republic y para Columbia, llegando a dirigir para esta el que historicamente se considera el ultimo de ellos, Blazing the Overland Trail, en 1956.     1904-1982
       Nacido en Dinamarca, Blangsted dirige sus dos unicas peliculas en 1937. Nunca pasara a la historia por ellas, pero si por haber sido el responsable del montaje de una de las maximas expresiones del western, Rio Bravo (Howard Hawks, 1959). Es esta, la de montador, su verdadera actividad profesional dentro del cine; en ella trabajo entre 1944 y 1975, tanto en Estados Unidos como en el Reino Unido, y tambien para television.

    1916-2001
       Nacido en Chicago, Oscar Boetticher, Jr. estudio en la Central High School, la Culver Military Academy y la Universidad estatal de Ohio, donde destaco en futbol americano y en beisbol. Mas tarde, como es conocido, se interesaria tambien, vivamente, por el mundo de los toros, llegando a debutar como torero. Tal vez por esto ultimo fue contratado por la Fox como consejero tecnico de la pelicula Blood and Sand (Sangre y arena, Rouben Mamoulian, 1941). Casi de inmediato, en 1944, empieza a dirigir mo destas peliculas con su nombre completo, incluido el primero de sus westerns, The Wolf Hunters. Con The Bullfighter and the Lady (1951), de ambiente taurino, firmada ya como Budd Boetticher, empieza la que podria llamarse segunda etapa de su filmografia, de tono mas personal. Entre 1951 y 1956 dirige doce peliculas, nueve de ellas para Universal, con mayor o menor fortuna, de las que seis, exactamente la mitad, son westerns, algunos estimables. El propio Boetticher manifesto publicamente su preferencia por Traicion en Fort King, tal vez por ser el que peores criticas recibio. Se convierte en uno de los grandes nombres del western, y se hace justamente fa moso en todo el mundo a raiz de la realizacion de siete peliculas, cuatro de las cuales (Seven Men from Now, Los cautivos, Cabalgando en solitario y Estacion Comanche) cuentan con guion de Burt Ken nedy. Conocido este conjunto de peliculas como el “ci clo Ranown” (Randolph Scott + Harry Joe Brown), las siete fueron protagonizadas por Randolph Scott, y constituyen un hito singular dentro de la historia del genero cine matografico al que pertenecen. Cada una de ellas presenta un modelo de “itinerario” hacia la vida, la libertad, mas raramente el amor, que ha cen de este punado de joyas cinematograficas un material de gran interes humano y no menor belleza plastica y dramatica, presidido por la sencillez, la ausencia, por tanto, de retoricas, conceptual y formal, y la coherencia artistica. Por ello, el nombre de Budd Boe tticher figurara siempre con letras de oro en el panteon de hombres ilustres del western sonoro.
       El fin del ciclo Ranown parece ser, tambien, el fin de la ac tividad de Boetticher como director, si exceptuamos esporadicos episodios de series televisivas, labor que inicio en 1950, antes incluso de rodar The Bullfighter and the Lady, un postrer western, A Time for Dying, y un par de peliculas de tono documental. Hay quien afirma que, de no haber existido las peliculas del ciclo Ranown, el nombre de Budd Boetticher apenas mereceria una nota a pie de pagina en los diccionarios de directores. Tal afirmacion es, sin duda, exagerada, lo que no obsta para que, efectivamente, sean las peliculas de ese ciclo, consideradas individualmente y tambien en conjunto, las que le hayan supuesto su mayor gloria.
