The first stage, ESO, or Educación Secundaria Obligatoria, is for 12- to 16-year-olds. It is free and compulsory and includes both vocational and academic subjects. Students are awarded the Título de Graduado en Educación Secundaria on successful completion at age 16 and can leave school at this point.
