For elections to the German Bundestag a mixed system of voting operates. Each voter has two votes. The Erststimme is used to directly elect a representative in each of the 299 constituencies and this accounts for half of the available seats. The Zweitstimme is cast for the Landesliste of a party. The number of party candidates sent to the Bundestag is in proportion to the result of the poll. The Erststimme and the Zweitstimme are cast separately. See: → Bundestag -
